Thomas Francis Murphy
Thomas F. Murphy (age 77) of Kiskeam, Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, passed away in San Francisco, CA on January 28th, 2019. Tom was a devoted husband of the late Maureen Murphy for 31 years. Loving father to Thomas Francis Murphy Jr, and Rose Marie Murphy Iaconetti (Gianpiero). Adored grandfather of Julian, Myles, and Avalon Iaconetti. Brother of the late Mary Looney (Pete), the late Jerry Murphy (Sheila), Martin Murphy (Sheila), Mikey Joe Murphy (Peggy), Paddy Joe Murphy (Loretta), the late Patsy Cronin (Michael), Tadghie Murphy (the late Phyllis), Philomena Ankettell (Thomas). Highly respected Brother in Law to the late Jack O'Connor, Peggy Liston, Danny O'Connor, Gerald O'Connor, Eileen O'Looney (Michael), and Kathy Rabon (David). Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and relatives here and abroad.
Tom moved to San Francisco from Ireland in 1959. After living in the Mission District, Haight Ashbury, Alaska (1966), and Noe Valley, he met and married the love of his life, Maureen. They settled in the Excelsior District and he worked as a Longshoreman for well over 30 Years. He was a well respected member of ILWU Local 91 and was grateful to have one of the best jobs in America.
As a proud Corkman, Tom was always doing his part to build community and family. His love for building, fixing, and basically finding a solution to any project he touched, made him someone who could always get things done. Whether it was helping the Irish Community, providing assistance to his immediate and extended family, local community, or Epiphany Parish, he could always be counted on to provide some help, sound (and very direct!) advice, volunteer work, and basically be there till a project was completed. Also, he was always willing to lend a helping hand at every turn throughout someone's life.
During his retirement years, Tom enjoyed spending his days at the local coffee shop, walking in Crocker Amazon Park, chatting with friends in the neighborhood, and taking extended trips to his beloved country home at the Russian River and the occasional trip back to his native home, Ireland. In the Excelsior District of San Francisco, he was known as the Mayor of his block, and had his garage door opened to everyone.
Friends may visit Friday, February 8, 2019 from 3pm and are invited to attend the Vigil Service at 7pm at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 9th at 11:30am at Church of the Epiphany, 827 Vienna Street, San Francisco. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.
Tom will be dearly missed by his family, friends and all of the people he touched. Tom's family wishes to extend extra special thanks to his loving caretakers, Irene Barbasa and Grocilda Tejano, and family who cared for Tom during his final days.
