If you knew Tim Wallace at all, you were lucky. If you knew him well, you were really lucky. Luckily he had a good long run, otherwise, I would be crushed, more crushed than I am. There are very few lives that are lived that have presented such friendship, to such a number of people. Tim Wallace, Bravo!
We must have met in the late 80's. Case #1 at the UCD-Wells Fargo seminar that had some impossible name like ‘Strategies in a Changing Environment, a Seminar for Agricultural Leaders’. Wells picked Glen Ellen Winery as a case study – God knows we owed them plenty of dough – and the partnership was represented by myself. Tim was the moderator, and what an energetic, fabulous job he did. Having never experienced the Socratic way of teaching and examination, I was star-struck.
The little-winery-that-could, which went from zero to four million cases and met the big league of California Agriculture, and Tim was there to midwife it all for me. And it went from there...
Time at Bolliboka, the fish camp on the McCloud River, having him review my fledgling writings, and forcefully saying “Say what you mean.” To how many parties in Glen Ellen? Benbow Inn at Garberville for the New Year’s Gala...
Ooh Tim, what a teacher, soul, and soul-father... Thank you for the good long run! And thank you MJ for being there for him. Thank you MJ.

Only now, I read this news. Tim was a treasured friend and colleague. Nancy and I loved him and will miss him forever. His obit is appreciated- well said - but I wish it were book length. I dwell on my sense of loss, but must remember that I am but one of many friends and family sharing this memory.

Tim was in every sense a ‘Man of the World’. He was also the finest representative of the USA combining a pioneering spirit, practical skills, humanity and wisdom. I am so grateful that we met in the early 1970’s and that we stayed in touch and exchanged ideas for almost 50 years. I am pleased that I can say that ‘we were friends’ even though London to Berkeley is a significant distance.
Memories of coming to Berkeley in 1972 and 1972 are still vivid, as is Henry Island. Above all I will remember Tim’s smile and his love of life. Deep condolences to Marye Jayne, Peter and Barbara.
