Peter Redfield Obituary

Peter Scranton Redfield

April 21, 1931 - May 24, 2018

Peter Scranton Redfield died with his family at his side on May 24th at the age of 87.  He was born in Cambridge, MA and resided for the past fifty five years in Atherton, CA. His kindness, optimism and intelligence were traits greatly admired by family and friends.

Upon graduating from Colgate University, Peter entered the Naval Officer's Training Program in Newport, Rhode Island.  He was a First Lieutenant on the USS Forrest Sherman. After being honorably discharged, Peter began a successful career first with Varian Associates, then McKinsey & Co and Transamerica.  Striking out as an entrepreneur, he founded and was CEO of Itel Corporation, a pioneer in the leasing industry.  Peter's boldness and vision were instrumental in rapidly building Itel to be a leader in computer and transportation leasing. Following Itel, Peter founded a private equity firm, Redfield Management, that was active in investments across a range of industries.

Peter was a trustee of Colgate University in upstate New York and Crystal Springs School in Hillsborough, CA.  He also served on several boards including: Alexander & Baldwin, Fred S. James Insurance, International Boys & Girls Club and Riegel Textile Corporation. He was a current and past member of the Bohemian Club, Burlingame Country Club, Menlo Circus Club, Pacific Union Club, Palo Alto Club and the U.S. Seniors Golf Association.

Peter was an avid golfer, domino player, boater, fly fisherman and crossword puzzle enthusiast.  He found great pleasure being a global traveler with his wife, in particular trekking and hiking in Nepal, Bhutan, Switzerland and the Sierra Nevada mountain range. He instilled a passion for new adventures in his children and grandchildren, embarking on family travels to Asia, Africa, Europe and Egypt.  He also had very fond memories of spending many years in the Hawaiian Islands and Glenbrook, Nevada where he had residences.

Peter gave generously of his time to teach golf and dominos to his grandchildren.  He was a committed and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Peter is survived by his wife of sixty two years, Alice, along with his son Charles, daughters Anne and Sarah and six grandchildren: Nicholas, Matthew, Connor, Kate, William and Claire. Peter's greatest joy in life came from his family and his legacy will live on with them.  He will be remembered for his sense of humor and dignity which sustained him throughout his long and full life.

Peter's family - his wife, children and grandchildren are all a tribute to the kind of person he was - all caring and distnctive people in their own right. May you rest in peace, dear Peter.

My deepest condolences to the Redfield family. May your wonderful memories outlast the emptiness. I met Peter during Itel's tremendous successes in IBM and Amdahl computer leasing days, and later, occasionally in Glenbrook.

My deepest condolences to the family of Peter Redfield. This passionate and brilliant man gave me a huge start in life at ITEL a few years after I immigrated to the USA. My family are forever grateful and we will never forget his many personal kindnesses and care. Rest in eternal peace, Pete.

Worked with Peter at McKinsey and, later, Itel. He offered me the Itel job over lunch at Sam's Grill. I will always remember his support and encouragement - and infectious laugh!
