Masaoka, Sachi Helen (Kawahara), 90, longtime resident of San Mateo, passed away in Los Angeles on April 6, 2018. She was the seventh of nine children born to Momotaro and Takeno Kawahara (Kawahara Nursery) in San Lorenzo. Sachi was 14 years old when she and her family were interned during World War II at Tanforan and then at Topaz. After the war she went to Cal Berkeley where she met Tad Masaoka with whom she shared 49 happy years. As she often said, Tad was "one in a million," and "he made me laugh every day."To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Helen was such a sweet, vibrant lady who took every opportunity to share her love for Jesus with everyone she came across. She was good friends with my grandma, Joan Burket, and I got to see her when I´d visit my grandparents in the summer. What a shining example of God's Grace and love she was.

Oh how we loved Mrs. Masaoka! She was bubbly, kind, and always looking out for others' needs. My earliest memories of her were when I attended Good News Club at her home in San Mateo in 1962 or so. After club, we children would all line up at her typewriter and wait our turn for Mrs. Masaoka to type out our Bible verse on an index card for us to take home and memorize. It was at these Bible clubs where I first put my trust in Christ as my Savior. I will always thank God for Mrs. Masaoka. She was one of my mom's dearest friends and now they are together forever.

I will miss Sachi, she was a friend I met at the Mount Hermon Family Conference in the Santa Cruz area. May God bring comfort to the family.
