Henry McMicking Obituary
Henry A. McMicking Age 89, died at Stanford Hospital on Tuesday March 4, 2008, just three weeks short of his 90th birthday. He was born in Manila, Philippines on March 28, 1918 to Jose and Angelina McMicking. For his high school education he attended Mt. Tamalpais School for Boys in San Rafael, CA, and later attended Stanford University where he graduated with a BA. He was active in sports at Stanford where he was a member of the track team and competed in the 1937 exhibition games. He was also a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. While at Stanford he was drafted into the US Army becoming one of the "Greatest Generation." As a member of the US Army Air force he was an intelligence officer reaching the level of captain while stationed in Great Ashfield, England - he was the briefing officer of the great air offenses for the invasion of Normandy and Central Europe. At the end of the war he returned home to San Francisco and joined his wife Doris and his 18-month old daughter whom he had never seen. Henry started his distinguished business carrier as a pioneer in the venture capital community. He was directly involved with Ampex Corporation as vice chairman of the board, which gained it's recognition as the developers of the first tape recorder and video tape. He was also on the board of a number of public companies over his 40 years of being active in business. Henry and Doris raised their family in Atherton where they have lived for almost 60 years. One of Henry's civic joys was being the mayor of Atherton in the mid- '60s and a trustee of the Castileja School for Girls. Other affiliations were the Menlo Country Club and the Pacific Union Club. The greatest enjoyment in Henry's life was spent at the family's beautiful Santa Angelina Ranch in Sonoma surrounded by his loving family and many friends. Henry is survived by his beloved wife Doris whom he was married to for 65 years. He is also survived by his four children: daughter, Alexandra and sons; Alfred, Henry and Bennett; and their spouses, Robert Ellsorth, Debbie and Sharon. Five grandchildren: Brent, Hatley, Walker, Whitney and Megan; and one great-grandchild, Kylie. He was preceded in death by his brothers Joseph and Alfred; and sisters, Helen and Consuelo. A family celebration of his life was held at the family ranch. Please give any donation in his memory to your favorite charity.
