Donald Flaxman Obituary

Donald Flaxman Our Donald died peacefully Saturday, January 17 after a brave battle against pancreatic cancer. Don was born on May 27, 1934, in New Haven, CT, to Barnard and Pat Flaxman. He is survived by his wife Carole; his daughter Jamie and grandson Sam; and locally by his nephew Jon and family. Don's "family" is large and extensive particularly because of his commitment to the creation of the Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin and as a grief couselor/board member with KARA in Palo Alto. He was a spiritual seeker with a strong sense of justice and participation such as his fundraising for the Vietnam Friendship Village Project, PO Box 559, Arcada, CA. Travel was a real passion and he and Carole had adventures far and wide. He also touched many lives through his wise counsel as a financial consultant and advisor. He lived well and fully and his friends and family will miss his irreverent sense of the absurdities of life. Memorial service to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to Pathways Hospice, 585 North Mary Ave, Sunnyvale, CA 94085 or the Ecumenical Hunger Program, 2411 E Pulgas Ave, East Palo Alto, CA 94303.

Don provided wise and skillful counsel while we
worked on fundraising for the Insight Meditation
Center in Redwood City. I am grateful for that and
the talks on dana (generosity) that he gave
at our Center. He would always note with a
twinkle of the eye that the dana received would be multiplied and given to the good works of
IMC. Cheryl Hylton

Carole, you may not remember me, but I grew up with Don in West Hartford, CT, living on the next street from Don and his parents. I knew Don since kindergarden. I will miss his wonderful sense of humor . . . so quick and bright! Hopefully he is in a better place. Please accept my deepest condolences.

Dear Carole, Jaime and Sam, Don's wonderful humor, counsel and love first to my parents and then to me have blessed my family for many years. I have been privileged to count Don as friend and confidant and through him to know you Carole. The support and love you gave to each other will sustain you now. Jaime and Sam, your father/grandfather was a wonderful man who gave much of himself to others.

Thank you, Don, for the many misadventures and adventures we shared; the laughs and loving irreverence. Whenever you come to mind, the first word that follows is "mensch." You will always be that. Love and blessings to Carole, Jamie and Sam.

Don was a gift to the universe. His counsel was a significant help to me some 30 years ago, when he knew me only through Kara. After that I knew him as a friend, neighbor, counselor, and above all, a caring and wise gentleman in every sense. Bless Carole, she above all had the pleasure of his company.
