James Deitz Obituary

Dr. James Emery Deitz

Dr. James Emery Deitz, passed away peacefully in his home in Tiburon on the morning of July 13, 2018. He's survived by his three children, Maggie Champagne, Alice Perez and James Deitz, as well as eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild. James was born in Jamestown, North Dakota on June 14, 1930. He and his late wife, Jean Alice Deitz, celebrated 61 years of marriage on August 31, 2013. For the last few years of his life he traveled with and enjoyed the loving companionship of Gloria Horne.

Having earned his Ed.D. in Education from the University of California Los Angeles, James began his career by teaching courses in business at the collegiate level and soon after purchased the 4C's (Central California Commercial College) in Fresno, CA in 1963, transforming the college into the largest, private, two-year business school in California. Through his vision and business acumen, he acquired Heald's College in 1966 and during his tenure expanded to 13 campuses in three states. He was President of Heald Colleges, a position he held from 1966 to 1994. James was a philanthropic leader who dedicated his time and financial support to many charities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as being past president of SF Rotary and along with several other Rotarians, a founding member of Alliance for Smiles. James was past president of Easter Seal Society of the Greater Bay Area, Board Chair of the Salvation Army Northern California Region, board member of the Red Cross, Rotaplast International, YMCA, Bank of Marin and Marine World. He was the author of several books in business and mathematics. He had a remarkable and distinguished career fueled by his extraordinary work ethic, enormous intellect and devotion to community.

James was an avid golfer, long time member of The Olympic Club and spent the latter years of his life surrounded by family, friends and his beloved golden retrievers. Throughout his life he was guided by his passion to educate and strong belief in the entrepreneurial spirit. Having lived a life filled with many achievements, he will be remembered most for his friendship, tremendous wit and lasting contributions to others.

At his request a private service for family and close friends will be held at his home on July 21 from 3:00 – 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Guide Dogs For The Blind: P.O Box 151200 San Rafael, CA 94915.

Special note to Jim Jr-I will never forget 1987 when I rented a room from you and your dad gave us vip passes to the Olympic Club for the US Open. The day before that we were trying like heck to find tics and we end up in the ABC TV tent with the most fantastic food spread and such. Your dad was so cool he even gave a cup pass to some kid at the gate. Cracked us up when he took the ticket and ran like Jim Sr was gonna grab it back. Send me an email to relive it all [email protected].

What a treasure Jim has been to our family these last few years. He was so dear to our mother, Gloria. He lit up any room with his positive energy and had a kind word for everyone. He will always be remembered by our family with the warmest regards. We are so very sorry for your loss.

Jim was a great mentor to me as I started my career in educational administration in the late 60's. He will be missed.
