Kent Roberts Obituary

Kent Roberts

April 21, 1947 - Sept 11, 2019

Kent Roberts, well-respected San Francisco Bay Area artist and retired Exhibitions Design Manager at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, passed away on September 11, 2019 of pancreatic cancer. He was born on April 21, 1947 in Minneola, New York. In 1969, he graduated from the University of New Mexico with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. In 1970, he joined the US Navy, serving as an officer aboard the USS Kitty Hawk off the coast of Vietnam. When he returned, he followed his passion for art, and completed a B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute (1974 and 1976).  Kent's artistic production reflected his diverse educational background and experiences and bridged the boundary between engineering and the arts.
Kent's paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints have been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions, and he has a long history of public art commissions including his "Three Bridges" and "Passage" sculptures in San Francisco, his designs within the San Francisco City College Library lobby, his "Montgomery Monument" in San Jose, and his "Seagoing" installation at Etec Systems in Portland.  He was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1980. His sculpture "Untitled" (1998) is included in the permanent collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and is currently on view.
Kent will be remembered for his affable personality, compassionate spirit, good humor, unrelenting inquisitiveness, and intellectual drive. He was treasured by his family and had an extensive and ever-expanding circle of friends who cared deeply for him.  He actively supported the greater artistic community and stayed abreast of exhibitions, musical performances, and theatre, and he was a regular attendee of Tom Marioni's Society of Independent Artists. He maintained friendships with countless artists with whom he worked throughout his nearly 40-year tenure at SFMOMA, and he earned the respect, admiration and affection of hundreds of colleagues.
His unquenchable curiosity and love for adventure and travel resulted in long excursions to Japan where he completed temple pilgrimage walks and to northern England where he hiked Hadrian's Wall.  More recently, he traveled for two months throughout Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand visiting remote villages and temples.
He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Eloise Roberts. He is survived by his sister, Gail Roberts, brother-in-law, Bill Fields, La Mesa, CA; sister, Debbi Jackson, brother-in-law Greg Jackson, Phoenix, AZ and nephews Travis Fields, and Blake and Paul Jackson.
A memorial service is forthcoming at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.  In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the American Cancer Society.

I had a meeting with Kent at Passage. The piece was installed but the elaborate base was not. We were discussing the base when an elderly woman walking by came up to us and began a rant...This sculpture is disgusting, its a blight on the neighborhood, travesty, etc. etc and the artist should be drawn and quartered. Kent says Well, i just happen to be the artist. She says Well, you should be drawn and quartered...more and more nasty invective. Kent waits till she flames out, then says Thank you so very much, you dont know how much this means to me. She says Wha!!? Kent presses his hands in prayer position, smiles and says If you have such a well-developed opinion of this sculpture, then you must have studied it intensely and you must have looked at it for a long time. If you looked at it, studied it and formed an opinion, that it the greatest compliment you could ever pay an artist, no matter what the outcome of your opinion. She turned on her heel and stomped off. Kent did not burn, he did not get sucked into it, he just remained a gentleman throughout, not to mention profound art wisdom.

Although this is not a personal memory, I'd just like to note that Kent is remembered by some of the artists who worked with him on the enormous Lowell Nesbitt mural painted high on the back wall of the Administration Building on Treasure Island, San Francisco.https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/treasure-island-naval-history-mural

Thanks to the many old friends who attended Kent's Celebration of Life yesterday. It was very heartwarming to hear all the old stories about Kent and the shared photos and anecdotes. From former Art Students of the SFAI, to Past SFMOMA interns and retired Curators from Mills College & the Oakland Museum, SIA attendees and both neighbor's & friends who gathered on Saturday to give Kent a loving send-off. Thanks to all who brought cards, flowers, food and love and gave up a portion of their weekend to honor Kent. It was an up-lifting experience and, he deserved it! -Ciddy

Kent was just so warm. The benches that he made for the Rosenberg Library at City College were always a safe landing place for new students and students who needed a respite. Thousands of students found a safe harbor on his two beautiful, curved steel benches. Walking by them, seeing them fully occupied, always made me think of Kent.

I'm looking forward to hearing when the memorial organized by family, friends and his SFMOMA family will take place. I would like to attend! Best wishes and condolences to everyone who's missing him.

Artist, adventurer, friend, mentor, Kent Roberts was a humble, stalwart, man whose creative acumen helped to design and engineer scores of exhibitions at SFMOMA and beyond. It's impossible to fathom the Bay Area art scene without his presence and reassuring smile. His many treks throughout the world were an inspiration. His public commissions remain for all to admire. Rest in peace dear Kent.

I'll never forget Kent. We met during my turbulent days as a student at the San Francisco Art Institute. Cid and I shared an apartment on Union Street in 1973. She brought Kent over and I was struck by what a nice guy he was and how happy Cid seemed. I always enjoyed seeing them doing so well for so many decades. His art will always be treasured in San Francisco!

Love you Kent

Few people will be more sorely missed by more people. Friends, family and the extended family of SFMOMA are planning an as-of-yet unscheduled service to celebrate his life. I look forward to honoring his memory with his family, many friends and former colleagues at SFMOMA at this future service. Family kindly request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

What a loss! Its impossible to think of San Francisco without Kent. He was such an intrinsic part of our Art world and so loved and appreciated by all. That in itself is a miracle as the friends almost lined up around the block to see him in the hospital. Kent and I started our professional art life almost at the same time, the 70s. He provided some of the most satisfying and lovely times in the gallery, the way it was supposed to be. On installation days we would have picnics with the student helpers, on the floor, in order to discuss every detail of the artists and their work. It was never just a job it was a joy.
He was a wonderful man!
