Johnny Seymour Obituary

John Calvin Seymour

Shreveport, LA - John Calvin Seymour passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 2, 2014 after a battle with Cancer. "Johnny", as he was best known by friends and family, was born December 19, 1937 in Elberton, GA to William and Omie Seymour.

Johnny came to Shreveport with the Air Force, where he eventually met and married the love of his life, Patricia Smith Seymour. This month, they would have celebrated 37 years of marriage.

A man devoted to his family, Johnny was the loving father to five children: Debra Seymour Sedransky, John Seymour, Jr., Carla Seymour Roberts, Kimberly Farmer Allen and Tommy Farmer. He was "Papa" to eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. All of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember him as a kind, loving, funny and gentle man who lit up the room with his smile and gave great hugs. Johnny absolutely adored each of his children and made sure each of them knew how proud he was of the adults and parents they had become. He will be greatly missed by all of them.

Johnny worked as an auto damage appraiser for more than 40 years, but his true passion was country music. He was a truly talented entertainer who felt most at home on the stage picking a guitar and singing traditional country classics. Many of his friends know him from the days when he played on what was once known as the Bossier strip and the Shanty Club in Shreveport. In his early days, Johnny recorded songs in Nashville that would eventually get him on the stage of the "Louisiana Hayride", where many of country music's biggest stars got their start.

Johnny's passion for playing music never let up. Upon retirement from the auto appraisal business, he turned his then part-time hobby back into a full-time gig, playing music regularly with local classic country music bands. For Johnny, this was his chance to go back to what he truly loved and anyone who knew him, understood just how excited and grateful he was for the chance to be back on stage with his friends and fellow musicians.

The family would like to give special thanks those who cared for Johnny: Dr. Chad Hargon and the staff of the Willis Knighton Cancer Center, Drs. Mark and Melanie Smith, Dr. Gazi Zibari and Willis Knighton Hospice. Their care and commitment to Johnny during his battle with Cancer meant the world to his family and especially to Johnny himself.

A memorial service will be held for Johnny on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 5 pm at Aulds Funeral Home in Shreveport, LA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Johnny's name to the American Cancer Society.

I was unable to contact Johnny's family after hearing of Johnnys passing. I trust Johnny knew the Lord. I had not seen or heard from johnny in a good number of years and had been in contact with some of his acquaintances. Then I began trying to contact him and finally made contact with Johnny Jr. Johnny and I met here at Barksdale, AFB in 1958,and had a little band and gigged around then in Chanute Field, Ill, we got a group together and played at the club on base. Those were great and memorable times. I know my friend will be greatly missed by aall especially the family. God bless all of you the family of my friend

Johnny & I used to fly model airplanes together. He taught me how to read a blueprint and build a flying model from nothing but a plan and a stack of balsa wood. He also taught me the the art of spray painting with acrylic lacquer. Johnny was an artisan with a paint gun. Johnny, you were a great freind and mentor. Rest easy... you earned it. Godspeed my friend!!

I use to work at a local body shop years ago and had the pleasure of working with Johnny on a weekly basis with his estimation of the battered and beat up autos of those days. He was a true gentlemen and always had such a good nature about him. Prayers to Johnny's family and friends as you go forward without him. He's with God today! God Bless All...

It has been a long time since I heard his name, but I remember when he and my brother and others used to play music together at home and other places. I was a kid then. So sorry for your loss.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to John Calvin Seymour our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Johnny. And to Johnny it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country while serving in the U.S Air Force. Johnny, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Johnny's family and loved ones.
