Rhya Marohn Obituary

On December 20, 2020, we lost Rhya Marohn of La Plata, Maryland. Rhya was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, activist and friend. Rhya will be remembered for her professional excellence as a house-call veterinarian; her determination for social justice through political and grassroots action; and most of all, for her dedication to her family.

Rhya held many titles: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. U.S. Army Captain. Juris Doctor. "Marathon Maniac" in her pursuit to run a marathon in all 50 states. But she always said her most important role was mother, and she loved, honored, and supported her children, Sydney and Carter, in every way imaginable.

Rhya was preceded in death by her son, Carter, in 2019. She is survived by her husband, Sean Johnson; her daughter, Sydney Marohn-Johnson; her parents, Rick and Patricia Marohn; her brother, Timun Marohn; her dogs, Sweetie, Rex and Charlie; and so many other family members and friends whose lives were lucky enough to be touched by Rhya's genuine kindness and care.

We look forward to celebrating Rhya's life in the future, when we can all gather safely to honor her memory with hugs and fellowship. Until then, memorial Rhya Rocks will join the thousands of Carter Rocks being shared and found in Charles County and around the world. Visit CarterandRhya.rocks for more information.

Rhya asked that we remember her by supporting these organizations she held dear: Carter Marohn-Johnson Memorial Scholarship (cartermjscholarship.com); Port Tobacco River Conservancy (porttobaccoriver.org); Ladles of Love Soup Kitchen (thearnoldhouse.org/ladles-of-love); and Not One More Vet (suicide prevention and support for veterinarians: nomv.org).

Dr. Marohn was our vet many years ago. She was wonderful with the animals and would sometimes bring her children along. It was beautiful to see them all together and her sharing her love of animals with them. I’m heartbroken for all the heartbreak her family has been through.

Rhya inspired us in many ways. . .her causes, her passions, and yes, on being a mom, which we all learned so much about through her Facebook posts. If there is ease in Rhya’s passing it is to know that this person with so much passion and so much love no longer feels pain. We grieve for her and with her family as the light who continues to shine because she was and will always be Radiant Rhya.

I met Rhya in a bereaved DVM group online. She was always so supportive of the other moms. She even sent me a shoe lace charm after I told her I was going to start running, in memory of my daughter, because someone gave her one for Carter and it meant a lot to her. It meant to world to me. Sean and Sydney I’m thinking of you ❤

To me, Rhya was a bright light. I admired her brain power, her steadfast convictions, her energy, her consistent kindness to mankind and animals, her serious drive to do good and her clear love for her family. Her light will remain bright forever through her many acts of kindness. My deep sympathy to Sean and Sydney, to her family and to all who she encounter. Peace. Just peace to you all.

Rhya was truly a leader. I admire her devotion to her family and I was excited that she wanted to do something special just for herself. In 2018, she joined a women’s kickball league and she stepped up to coach her team. She was a beast on third base and her defense was amazing. It was a joy getting to know her and I wish Sean, Sydney, and her other family members my heart felt sympathy and condolences.
