Russell Sherlund Obituary

Russell Albert Sherlund, age 68, of Cedarville, Michigan, died suddenly on June 23, 2019. He was born August 8, 1950, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to Rudolph August and Opal Elizabeth (Harrison) Sherlund.
Russell was a lifelong Cedarville resident and graduated from Cedarville High School in 1969, where he played multiple sports. He was drafted into the United States Army in the fall of 1969. Immediately following basic training, he was stationed in Vietnam until his discharge in September of 1971. While serving in Vietnam, he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal and recognition for marksmanship. Russell returned to Cedarville where he, his brother, Lyle, and their father, worked together building Rudy Sherlund Excavating, Inc. into a respected business providing excavating services to the Cedarville area. During the past few years he has especially enjoyed adding his son, Ross, and his nephew, Jason (Lyle's son) to the work crew at the business.
Russell has been a member of the Dafter Horse & Pony Club/Tri-County Speed Horse Association for over 50 years. Horses were always a big part of his life and one of his greatest joys was getting all of his children riding and competing.
Everyone wanted to get their hands on a ""Russell"" horse. His last ride was June 22, 2019, in Stalwart where he placed in several events. Russell took his family on many family vacations to Florida where he and his wife, Susan, now spend their winters. Russell and Susan enjoyed going to auctions, garage sales, and flea markets. You never knew what treasure or deal they might find to bring home to their resale shop in Cedarville.
Russell has always been an avid sports fan of all of the area teams. Even as an adult, he played multiple sports himself. He followed his children, nieces, and nephews, no matter what school they played for or what sport they played, including basketball, volleyball, hockey, baseball, and track. He loved to attend every game and often came home to tell them what they could do better, win or lose.
Russell is survived by his wife, Susan Elaine (Tuori) Sherlund whom he married November 30, 1974, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Cedarville; daughter, Stephanie Tuori of Cedarville; sons, Benjamin Sherlund of Traskwood, Arkansas, Andrew (Jennifer) Sherlund of Rose City, Michigan, and Ross (Ashley) Sherlund of Cedarville; grandchildren, Colten Hill, Jager Hill, Maverick Sherlund, Ethan Sherlund, Isla Sherlund, and Sailor Sherlund. He is also survived by sisters, Rosemary (Mark) McPherson of Cedarville, and Beverly (William) Tuori of Dafter, Michigan; brother, Lyle (Sharon) Sherlund of Cedarville; and brother-in-law, Gary Graham of Alpena, Michigan.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; son, Scott Tuori; and sister, Gloria Graham.
Services will be held Friday, June 28, at R. Galer Funeral Home, 24549 S. M-129 in Pickford, Michigan. Visitation will be held from 12-4 p.m. with the funeral service to follow beginning at 4 p.m.
Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery in Cedarville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Tri-County Speed Horse Association, P.O. Box 1263, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783 or Fuel Fund at Bethel Lutheran Church, 217 N. M-129, Cedarville, MI 49719.

Our prayers and thoughts are with Russell and his family in this time of grief. While we did not know Russell personally, he (and Lyle, Ross and Jason) helped us on several projects at our new house and I always looked forward to working with him. He was always very professional, honest and down to earth and normally had a quick and relevant comment for the occasion. Like when we were having our road modified he would simply say "The bigger the dozer the straighter the road".

We will miss him dearly.
