Richard Hilker Obituary

Richard Amerman Hilker, 85, formerly of Plymouth and more recently of South Dartmouth and Sorrento M,aine, died at his Dartmouth home Thursday, May 17, 2018, in the loving company of his wife, Crystal C. Campbell, and family. Dick was the son of the late Mildred (Amerman) and Henry F. Hilker Jr. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Dick grew up in Malvern, Long Island, and went on to attend Hofstra College. Following his graduation with a degree in Business Administration, Dick was proud to serve his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army. Subsequent to his military career, Dick moved to New England to pursue a career as a sales executive. In fulfilling this role with various companies, Dick took great pride in meeting and working with clients across the Northeastern United States. His professional career culminated in a partnership, Access New England, focusing on handicap access solutions to businesses and schools throughout the New England region. Dick lived for many years in Plymouth, remaining a resident until the death of his first wife, Diane (Moore) Hilker. It was there that he nurtured his lifelong passion for photography, becoming an accomplished and recognized artist specializing in still lives of flowers and, more recently, large format landscapes. He was one of the founders of the Plymouth Guild for the Arts, where he was instrumental in promoting photographic exhibitions. In addition to his photography Dick was an avid horticulturalist with a particular love for roses. He served as a member of the Board of the Plymouth Eel River Watershed Association. In 2011, Dick moved to South Dartmouth, where he married Crystal Campbell. During their eight-year marriage, Dick and Crystal enjoyed travels to Italy, France, and across New England. Along the way Dick documented their life at home and on the road with several series of superb photographs. But of course no picture could match their love for each other and their simple enjoyment in their lives together. In addition to his wife Crystal, Dick is survived by his sister, Janet H. DeGroff of Palmetto, FL; and his step-children, Linda Campbell Tunnicliffe (husband, Ted Tunnicliffe) of Laconia, N.H., Sean H. Lloyd (wife, Sharon Elston) of New Bedford, Jennie Kristel (husband, Michael Watson) of Burlington, VT; as well as nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank doctors Christopher Sweeney (Dana-Farber Institute, Boston) and John Yang (St. Annes Hospital, Fall River), for their care and support. Nurse Donna Gonzaga, as well as the nurses of Community Nurse Hospice Care, provided loving end-of-life care. Private interment will be in South Dartmouth Cemetery. Friends are invited to celebrate Dicks life at the New Bedford Yacht Club, 208 Elm Street, South Dartmouth, on Monday, June 18, from 4-6 p.m. Gifts in Dick's memory may be made to Buttonwood Park Zooligical Society, 425 Hawthorne St., New Bedford, MA 02740 or New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks, 608 Pleasant St., New Bedford, MA 02740. Regardless of your choice, Dick asks you to please lift a glass in a toast to his wonderful memory. Arrangements under the care of Concord Funeral Home, A Life Celebration Home, Concord. I never had the privilege of meeting Dick but met him virtually through our love of photography.

I live in the UK and wrote to him in 2005 about one of his beautiful floral images that I had found online.
The light was very special and I knew it wasn't just photographed with a camera and flash or natural light, so wrote to him to ask how he did it.
He was very generous in his reply, telling me he used a flatbed scanner. It inspired me to try to do some myself and I wrote back showing him my efforts.
His was such a generous mentor.
We started corresponding regularly comparing notes on scanner images we made and other photographic interests.
Later, he very kindly offered to print and frame some of my images to exhibit at the Plymouth Guild for the Arts and even managed to sell one for $300, which was a record for me.
I know how devastated he was after Diane passed and I always hoped he would find love again and was so pleased when he met Crystal. We lost touch after moved to be with her but he will always be fondly remembered.
RIP Dick
Heaven is a more beautiful place for having you in it.

I,enjoyed working along side Dick transforming the old Plymouth library into The Plymouth Center for the Arts. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always willing to help. He won many awards with his stunning photography. Dick was greatly missed around the Center when he moved from Plymouth. I always considered him a dear friend. My condolences to Crystal and family.

Richard and I had a wonderful time talking about cameras, collaborating on photography shows, working together on the board, and later occasionally meeting for coffee just to catch up. Dick was a very thoughtful and generous person, bright and creative; he cared deeply about our new art center, dedicating much of his efforts and passion to make it a success. He truly made a difference.

My sincere condolences for your great loss. May the God who "binds up the brokenhearted " and "comforts all who mourn", sustain your family during this challenging time. Isaiah 61:1,2.

I met Dick when I first volunteered at the Plymouth Center for the Arts. He was a lovely person and a true gentleman. I am often reminded of him when I see two of his photographs which hang in my home. I know Dick will be missed by many people.

I'm sure that I am one of those many people that Dick helped alone his way. He was very kind to me; truely a good and gentle man. The world is less, now that he's gone.

Dick was one of the first people to welcome me to the Plymouth Guild for the Arts with encouragement in my photography. We shared the same dream... that Photography would be recognized as "Art" not just "Photography" ...which it had not been in 2004 when I came to Plymouth. Today it is! I will always remember Dick as my friend, an excellent photographer and a very sensitive, caring man. Prayers to all his family...Mary Ann Lambert Horton
