James HOWELL Obituary

HOWELL, James Laurence August 24, 1930 - November 4, 2014 Jim was born in Spokane, August 24, 1930 to Overman and Lucile (McCroskey) Howell. He grew up in St. John, Washington and graduated from St. John High School in 1948. Jim attended Washington State College and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He was a student athlete, lettering both in basketball and golf. In 1952, he married his college sweetheart, Doris Mae Webber. After graduating from W.S.U. in 1953, Jim spent two years as a First Lieutenant in the Army. Jim and Doris returned to St. John, where he joined the family business. He became a regional leader in the farm machinery business, including pioneering the Steiger wheel tractors in the Inland Empire, and was Dealer Council President for Steiger Tractor. Jim retired in 2010. Jim was always an avid W.S.U. Cougar supporter and past Whitman County Cougar Club President. He was active in the St. John Golf Club, Community Club and Gun Club. As a charter member of the St. John Endicott School Foundation, he loved investing in the youth of St. John. He had a strong commitment to his community as evidenced by his many years building and caring for the golf course, finding a doctor for St. John, and serving on the State Rural Medical Board. Jim had a passion for people and believed the best of everyone. He was especially beloved by the many young athletes he coached in youth basketball. He was compassionate to all in need - whether they were human or dog! To Jim, friends were family. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris; his three children, James O. (Sue) Howell of Spokane, Jeffrey (Kristy) Howell of Woodinville, and Jo (Scott) Hennessey of Fairfield; as well as five grandchildren: Aaron (Emily) Howell, Hillary and Meghan Howell, and Shawn and Kelly Hennessey. He is also survived by his nephew, niece and their families. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jean, and her husband, Arnol "Swede" Gentry. Jim's family would like to give thanks for the special care given by Joan, the St. John Fire Department and Steve and the Hardware crew. A family graveside service will be held Saturday, November 8th, at 10:30 A.M. at the St. John Cemetery. A Community Celebration of Life will follow at Noon at the St. John Community building. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the St. John Golf Club, the St. John Fire Department, and the SJE School's Foundation or the charity of your choice. Doris, Jo and family...my sympathies on this monumental loss to the St John community and all who were lucky enough to know Jim. He touched so many with his enthusiasm and support of all and St John is a better place for his having lived there. His legacy is his wonderful family and his spirit will continue to be felt as they continue his lifetime wish to give to others.
