Several years ago I was auditing a history class at the Stamford Branch of UConn and I was fortunate to have John as a professor. John not only presented the topic, a slice of European history, very well, he did it with an incredible complexity and with a refreshing, but subtle sense of humor. I enjoyed the class very much, and was pleased to get to know John a bit when the class was over.
Truly a Renaissance man. More recently, Andrea and I were in a Spanish class with John and Mary. We are saddened by his passing.
