Virginia Egan Obituary

VIRGINIA JADWEGA SZYMANOWSKI EGAN went home to the Lord, to her sisters and to her parents on August 27, 2010. Ginny was in her 91st year. Born in Stamford, CT on October 30, 1918, she is the daughter of Marianna Obuchowska Szymanowski and Michael Szymanowski, and the eldest sister of Anna Mary Barnes and Victoria Theresa Lione, all of whom have predeceased her. Married to the late James J. Egan, Jr., she is the mother of James R. Egan of Arlington, Texas & Mary A. Williams of Stratford, CT. She is also the grandmother of James Egan of Norwalk, CT, Robert Egan of Millis, Mass., Robert Zito of Stamford, CT and has 6 great grandchildren as well as an extended family that includes 9 nieces and nephews. Ginny took an interest in cooking as a youth and over the years developed her skills and entrepreneurial abilities to begin a catering business. This experience led her to opening and operating the well remembered Cove Hill Deli in Stamford for many years until her retirement. When not caring for her family and cooking for family and others, she enjoyed golf, bowling and pinochle with family and friends. Dancing, music, writing and poetry were all hobbies she enjoyed and were part of her always-on-the-go life. She will be remembered as an example throughout her years of the "can do" spirit that was such a vital part of so many of the Greatest Generation. That spirit came alive perhaps most in the love and concern she demonstrated for her family. Her quick wit, her stories and what some would call her spunk, were her trademarks, now to be missed by all who knew her. Family and friends may call at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 on Wednesday morning, September 1, 2010 from 9:00-10:30AM, after which a procession will follow to St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford, CT 06902 for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00AM. Interment will follow at St. John's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Darien, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT 06897. My dear Auntie Gin,I will miss you and your stories.
One of my favorites was your trying to wrestle the paddle away from the gondolier in Venice.
You were the life of the party but also a rock to your family over the years. A touchstone to keep us grounded.
I cannot end without remenbering seeing the photo of you serving a salad to the David, Duke of Windsor at a business event. THe only one to meet royalty face to face over lunch.
Wait one more...potatoe pancakes by the thousands for her family. I will always be grateful for knowing and loving you.

Our Deepest condolences go out to your entire family. Some of my fondest memories were those days of going into Ginny's store when we moved to the Cove in 1970. When my mother first arrived from Europe, the first American she met, was her husband Jim in 1959 at the Stamford taxi company. I'll always remember her ! God bless.
