JOHANNA MARTHA RESIG Johanna Martha Resig, born in Los Angeles, California, on May 27, 1932, died peacefully on September 19, 2007 in Honolulu. She was the only child of Martha and Max Resig, and attended Los Angeles public schools and the University of Southern California where she discovered geology. Johanna received her Bachelor of Science in 1954 and her Master of Science in 1956, earning a Phi Betta Kappa key and Sigma Xi membership from the University of Southern California. Dr. Resig was awarded a Fullbright grant in 1962 and earned her doctorate in 1965 from the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany. During her more than forty years at the University of Hawaii, Dr. Resig earned the title Micropaleontologist and Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics; and retired as an Emeritus Professor in 2001. Dr. Resig is survived by her cousins and stepsisters Mary Alley of Folsom, CA, Peggy Van Sickle of Austin, TX, nieces Susan Marek of Sacramento, CA, Nancy Watson of Folsom, CA, Joan Lachowsky of Paso Robles, CA, Gretchen Singh of Austin, TX, Alice Meier of Yucca Valley, CA, nephews James Alley of West Sacramento, CA, Kurt Van Sickle, of Newcastle, OK, Mark Resig of Afton, WY, and other great cousins from around the world. Johanna was an inspirational model of kindness, humility and grace. The layers of our earth have lost a gentle detective and elegant custodian. Her family, colleagues, and friends are blessed by her memory. Private memorial will be held on October 6.
