Charles Carroll Obituary

Charles Ellwanger Carroll passed away on January 14, 2021 at Augusta Medical Center in Virginia. He was 88. Born on September 26, 1932 in Trappe, Maryland, he was the son of the late Paul Fletcher Carroll and Hannah Ann Ellwanger. He lived in Waynesboro, Virginia since 2001. Charles grew up in Trappe and graduated from Easton High School in 1949. He attended United Wesleyan College, now merged with Houghton College in New York, and received his bachelor's degree in religion. Ordained to The Wesleyan Church, he began pastoring in 1957 in Broomes Island, Calvert County. Several pastor assignments followed: Millenbeck, Danville, Richmond, and Altavista in Virginia; Magnolia Springs on the Gulf Coast of Alabama; later Roanoke, Virginia, Merchantville, New Jersey, and Gumboro, Delaware. In semi-retirement he pastored several United Methodist Churches in the Shenandoah Valley near his Waynesboro home. In 2016 Charles fully retired. Rev. Charles Carroll gave his life in ministry to the church and to futher God's kingdom. He loved to minister to families and was an encourager and friend to all age groups. He took a great interest in his parishioners and family and prayed daily for each one. Charles loved music and used his talent and leadership in his churches. He served on many leadership positions in the Wesleyan Church and was a delegate to the General Conference. He, along with his wife, Glenna, served God together faithfully and celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary last fall.

Charles is survived by his loving wife, Glenna (Kirtz) Carroll, his son, Charles "Greg" Carroll of North Springfield, VA and his daughter, Janice (Charles) Carroll Berstecher of Conyers, GA. As well as his grandson, Matthew Charles Berstecher, his sister, Mabel (Bob) Emerson of Keller, TX, sister, Sarah (John-deceased) Dunn of Oxford, Maryland and Destin, Florida, brother, Fletcher (Mildred) Carroll of Allentown, PA, sister, Eunice (Ron) Rankin, Bethlehem PA, sister, Polly (Lee) Gangaware, Colebrook, CT, and brother Paul (Faith) Carroll, Easton, MD, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Hannah Carroll.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 22, 2021 at 1 o'clock pm at the Oxford Cemetery.
