Not a day goes by that we don't remember Shots. Our tears are slowly giving way to sweet memories. We have been reminded by his short life that we need to live for today. David always did that - he lived in the moment and saw beauty in the small things in life. I pray Dave's family is encouraged to know how precious their son-brother-and dad were to the rest of us.

I just read all the kind words you have said about my brother. He is very missed. He made us smile by just showing up at our family gatherings. I miss the stories of his work and friends. Today David would have been 50yrs old. Love you and miss you Dave.

In 911 we rarely get to see or meet the officers in person, but we would have IM 'chats' on the MDTs on those long dogwatch shifts long before InstantMessaging of today. I would tell Dave to relay to Deb she was a hero to me, for her gift of life to her brother! You still are, Deb!! He was a fine brother, father, son, friend, cop. He touched many lives.
My thoughts are with you

My Deepest sympathies to Daves Family, Daughters, & all that knew him.
Dave was my 1st partner on the Northside, Oct./86, & remained partners for 6 years. He & myself were 24 at the time, new rookies, no chase policies etc...., & rolled on the Northside along with Joe McArthur.
We arrested many- many a bad guy, & never did I think I would not be going home at the end of the shift when working next to him. He always was there for you, & we fed off of each other in regards to the surroundings around us, a GREAT partner & person.
The citizens of Mpls. always got 110% from Shots when he was on the job, great humor, good jokes, & a super dad.
Shots, you will be deeply missed by myself & all, rest in peace my friend.

I am so very sad to learn of Dave's passing. I work downtown Minneapolis and was privileged to get to know him as he walked his beat; we often visited in the Skyway. We were "kidney buddies" as we had that in common -- kidney transplants. I will miss seeing him in the Skyway system. God Bless his girls and his family during this difficult time of grief. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Kirsten,Michaela,and Family,
We will truly miss Dave and wish we would have had more time to get to know him. We will especially miss our chit-chats outside. He was truly one of a kind and the most original person we have ever known. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family at this time.

Dave was truly one of the good guys who will be missed.
After I retired from the police department I began working at Orchestra Hall and many times Dave and his partner would stop by the Hall to BS and give me updates on what was happening at the police department.
I will always remember the Porky Pig head on his bikes handlebars.
I'll miss you Dave

Our deepest sympathy goes to Dave's daughters, family, and friends. We had the privilege of being his neighbor on Rock Lake. He was a kind and gentle man; always welling to help or just sit down for a chat. His neighbors at Rock Lake will miss him. Rest in peace. May the Love and Strength of our Lord be with you all at this difficult time. You are in our prayers- Tom and Cindy Blank, Foley MN

I had the pleasure of playing high school football with Dave. He was a genuinely nice guy, who was always smiling. Dave was a small-town kid who made good as a big-city cop.
I didn't see him much in recent years, but followed his career with Minneapolis PD with interest. I also sadly learned of his health struggles through his Family and friends.
It's sad to see such a good person taken way too soon. My sincere condolences to the Shotley Family.
Professional condolences as well from the entire Duluth Police Department at the loss of a fellow officer.

Shots touched our lives so deeply. He was closer than a brother. There are so many things we will miss about him: His smile, his love of talking politics, his ability to actually start and finish crossword puzzles (he's our only friend that was smart enough to do them), his can-do attitude - especially in the BWCA with 3 foot waves and portages with 6 inches of mud and of course his incredible ability to slay deer when noone else could.
He was a cop through and through - with so many great stories that he loved to share over mosquito infested bonfires and a cold beverage.
He will live on in all of us. God took home a "keeper" on Monday.
Our condolences to the whole family,
The Gray Family (we always called ourselves the Gray-Shotley Clan)

Dave was one of the true "good guys." He had many friends downtown who met him as he walked the beat and patrolled on his bike.
After retiring from the police department I worked PT at Orchestra Hall. Whenever I worked days at the Hall, Dave and his partner, Jimmy Stetson, would always stop by and let me know what was new on the department. I'll always remember his Porkey Pig head on his bikes handlebars.
RIP Dave!
