Jack was a wonderful clarinet player, he was always pushing the speed of the Clarinet Polka. Dick Peik and I played Amazing Grace at his funeral. He was gone way too soon.

I still miss Jack and his smile. He was such a nice person and a great clarinet player. He made our Fridley City Band rehearsals that much more fun.

I still miss Jack and think of him at every band practice, wishing he were still here to add his "zip" to our songs, and his smile to our banter.

Jack was the Faculty Chair for several of the course development projects I've worked on over the past few years. He was a joy to work with -- always so upbeat and friendly (you could almost hear him smiling through the phone). He also clearly cared a great deal about creating the best possible experience for learners. He will be very much missed.

I certainly am going to miss Jack. He was my "Second Life" supporter as we continually brought up the importance of integrating Second Life in our Capella courses. For the past four or five years we have been on the "bandwagon" continually pushing the envelope on how Second Life can be utilized in our courses. I know that he truly loved the different media and technologies that are available and wanted to see them integrated into the different schools for the betterment of the learning experience of all. I know that Jack will continue to look down at Capella and see his pursuits come to reality.
I also remember when we were at the Orlando Colloquium and we would go out to dinner. All we would talk about was how different technologies were being utilized in the courseroom and what benefits they provided to the learning experience. Jack was a great Techno Geek like us all!
My prayers and thoughts go out to Jack's family and love

My first memories of Jack are all around the SIGITE conference that Capella sponsored in October 2006. Jack worked very hard to ensure that all attendees at that conference left Minneapolis realizing that Capella was an educational institution that could promise learners a quality education. Many of the cynics left that conference realizing that Capella as an institution, and the faculty who represented it, really were working hard to meet the SIGITE standards- just in an online environment. Thanks to Jack we can now pursue ABET accreditation…and with any luck will be able to achieve that honor based on a Site Visit four years after that SIGITE conference Jack led.

DAD,
He was the most inspirational, caring, loving and the smartest person I know. I was proud to be his daughter. he was always there for my sister, my mom and I. He had a great sence of humor and he was always cracking a joke or two. He always took an enormus intrest in my school work, because of him I was able to graduate, amd pass all of my classes. we all miss him greatly, we all Love You DAD.

Jack was always welcoming and cheerful when I occasionally joined him in the clarinet section of the Fridley band. He could play too. Will miss his bright spirit, his enthusiasm, his good heart.

I worked with Jack at Capella. Jack was easy to talk to and relate to. He always tried to understand other people's perspectives, even when he didn't agree with them. I admired the way he tried to understand systems and people, even when they didn't make a lot of sense. I will miss seeing him, and especially hearing his laugh.

Susan and family. No words can tell you how grateful I am to have known Jack. He was one of the people who interviewed me at Capella and since that time 8 years ago he has been a devoted and wonderful colleague.
I will always think of him when I see a coffee mug with a nice coffee stain as he always said the coffee tasted better if there was a little flavor from an earlier cup. His sense of humor and passion for life will be my memories of him.
Sincere Sympathy.

I had the pleasure of presenting at a conference in LA with Jack in 2003. One evening we went to Spago for dinner. At the time, one of Jack's daughters was in culinary school, so he purchased Wolfgang's cookbook. While dining, Wolfgang came to our table to say hello and Jack was able to get the book autographed. I can still see that big smile on his face! I feel blessed to have known Jack and I will miss his smiling face.....

Jack was one of the "early originals" at Capella; he had that "can do" attitude and pioneering spirit, breaking new trails for program development. I will always remember his unflagging sense of humor, his ready smile and infectious optimism. I will miss him greatly!

Dear Susan and Family. I am very sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Jack developing and revising courses in the MSIT program. He had a great sense of humor and at the same time was serious about all things academic. I will miss his cheerful disposition. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Susan and Family. Jack was the most passionate person I ever meet about anything he would do, be that work, family or his music. I first meet Jack at Capella in 2001. We worked extensively together for many years. He was one of my favorite, most relied upon work friend and would always challenge me to do it better. I will deeply miss him and I am sorry for your loss.

Dear Susan and family, I am terribly sorry for you loss . I had the pleasure of working with Jack as well as being a student of his when I was working on my BS in IT. Sue, Amy, Cathy & the many others who will deeply miss this man of intellectual and collaborative capabilities who so cheerfully navigated his day. I especially appreciated how Jack respected the "folks in the trenches" that he worked so closely with here at Capella University. He was so willing to "walk with us" in the day-to-day details and lend his leadership, insightful & timely contributions, and encouragement. And, above all, his passion & overall disposition will be greatly missed.

The first project I worked on at Capella University was with Jack in 2001. We examined the courses and assessments for the IT programs to create improvements in the learning experiences. Over the years, we kept in touch through other Capella projects and through CETA. We also shared our individual progress as Capella doctoral learners pursuing our PhDs. I am so happy he was able to accomplish his educational and professional goals in the last 1-2 years. We were all so happy to see his success first hand. He sure represented our own Capella learner population in his drive for learning and growth and his related accomplishments!

Susan and family,
Please accept my condolences for your loss.
I had the pleasure of working on two long-standing Capella University committees with Jack, the Faculty Liaison Team and CETA, Capella's education technology advisory group. In both situations, Jack could be counted on to provide thoughtful insights. He was always willing to lend his hand to our projects. I always enjoyed Jack's mellow personality, yet his passion for his work was obvious. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. -Kate Petersen

Jack's office was right across the hall from mine. I worked with him on a couple of different ongoing committees at Capella University (faculty liaison group, CETA.) I'll miss Jack's ideas, and even more the gentle, persuasive way he presented them. Most of all I'll miss his occasional impromptu visits, where we just joked about mundane things like the weather or the pace of life at Capella. He had an unflagging cheerfulness about him that just kind of swept others along.

Jack was a cheerful, consistent presence at the Fridley City Band whose good-natured humor and general friendliness will be greatly missed, along with his superb clarinet playing. I'll also miss our IT chats. It won't be the same without you, Jack! Heartfelt condolences to his family -

I was remembering Jack and looking over the thousands of emails that I have from him during the time he worked on his dissertation at Capella. We talked or emailed almost every day. He was smart, funny, determined and in the process of becoming a scholar. Being part of the journey with him was a privilege because he shared so much of himself. His wife Susan, his children, and family meant everything to him. For a quiet and unassuming man, he leaves a wonderful legacy of getting the job done. It was an honor to be his mentor, friend and colleague. While most of you knew him on a face-to-face basis, I only met him once at a meeting in Minneapolis. It shows the power of distance education and virtual work that Jack believed in so strongly, that I feel that I've lost a dear friend.

It is heartbreaking to have lost our good friend and colleague. Jack was an excellent instructor and administrator, tireless enthusiast of innovative technology and good friend. His contributions to Capella will be long standing. His commitment to learner needs came through in every comment he made and in every idea he brought forth. He was an ardent volunteer for any project that would advance our capability to deliver the best learning experience. His contributions will be greatly missed.
As a friend, I will miss his humor, wisdom and coaching. He was one of the first people I met at Capella and he had my back from day one. His commitment to new ideas was infectious and he coached and challenged me along. I will miss his friendship and his easy laugh. My deepest condolences go out to Sue and family.
