Dolores Dissman Obituary

Dolores Dissman Dolores Dissman, age 80, of Austin, died Monday, August 25, 2009. Born Dolores Ann Louise Nimmons in Chicago, Illinois on August 28, 1928, she married Donald S. Dissman in 1950. She moved with her family in 1959 to Longview, Texas where she and her husband operated and owned The Golden Hour bookstore. In 1972, she joined her husband in Austin, Texas where, together, they originated and eventually franchised Schlotzsky's Sandwich Shops. She retired in 1981 after selling the corporation. Dolores Dissman was known to her friends as "Dolores". To her family she was known as "Mother", "Grandma", and to a select few "C.O.B.". Her greatest pleasure was her family; she was the glue that kept them together. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. She loved to listen to music, read, blow her money in Vegas, drink martinis, and travel the world. Her biggest "Talent" was making friends, making everyone she met feel welcome, and giving her friends and family her unconditional love and support. She will be missed by so many. Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Walker and her husband Gregory of Sugar Land, Texas, Laura Conant of Austin, Texas; and her three grandsons, Robert Conant, Matthew Conant, and Wyatt Walker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald S. Dissman and her parents. A special thank you to her caregivers at Seton Medical Center Intermediate Care Unit for giving her such kind attention over the last few days. A private service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2009. Arrangements by Cook-Walden Funeral Home, (512) 454-5611.

Dear Lisa,
I am sorry to hear that you have lost your mother. I don't know if I ever met her, but when I recall how much fun you and my sister, Cindy Meadows, had in band, and how bubbly your personality was, I know that your mother must have been an energetic, outgoing, and inspiring person.
We lost our mother nearly 4 years ago, and it seems that one is never ready for even the inevitable. I shall remember you in my prayers.

Sincerely,
Gwen (Meadows) Jones

I fondly remember Dolores Dissman as a kind of "Den Mother" to all of the early Schlotzsky's franchisees. Although she was moving 150 mph most of the time around the office, you knew without doubt that she was the one that could solve your problem. With a laugh (not a smile), she was always there to help us keep the ovens runnin', the jalapenos fresh and the customers happy. However, she was truly at her best when planning "fun" events ... for some strange reason, Guadalajara comes to mind! As is often said in west Texas when referring to a unique soul, "She was a piece of work!!!"
My heart has a special corner for Don and Dolores. Laura and Lisa, I pray that you will find comfort in the fact that your Mom and Dad were special to a lot of us and will always be remembered as good people.
God bless y'all and keep ya strong.

My dearest condolences,
I was a close friend with Paul Kirkland who spoke frequently of "Dee" as he called her. Although I did not meet her, Paul was so fond of her and spoke of her often. A lovely lady has passed indeed. My deepest sypathy for your loss.

Lisa...I'm really sorry to hear about your mother's passing. I remember your parents from 1972 when we were all at UT together. They were both amazing people. You were indeed fortunate to have them as parents.

sincerely,

I have many fond memories of Dolores, beginning with her holding court down on S. Congress. You knew you were in for a good time when Dolores was involved in the group, and even more so when she had planned a party. Her dry wit and memory of long past events that most of us had hoped to have been buried kept all of us both entertained and on our toes.

The family has lost a great presence, but will have plenty of stories for years to come.
