Gillian ADAMS Obituary

ADAMS, Gillian
1934 - 2016

Gillian Adams of Williamstown, Mass and Campobello Island, New Brunswick, died unexpectedly of heart failure on Monday, August 15, 2016. Born December 18, 1934 in New York City to Ruth Potter and Frederick Baldwin Adams, Jr., Gillian graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1955. She earned her PhD from University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1980.

Gillian attended, raised her daughters and taught at Buxton School in Williamstown, teaching students in the classics, history, music and current events. Later, she was a Graduate Instructor and Lecturer at both UMass Amherst and University of Texas at Austin. After retiring from teaching, Gillian was Editor and Publisher of Children's Literature Abstracts for the International Federation of Library Associations, and Editor and Associate Editor of Children's Literature Association Quarterly and authored many scholarly articles, reviews, lectures and papers. Gillian was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Modern Language Association, Children's Literature Association, Societe Internationale Renardienne and the National Coalition of Independent Scholars. Gillian was loved by her students and highly respected by her peers.

Gillian was an enthusiastic violinist, violist and viola da gamba player. She loved playing in the Sage City Symphony, with her beloved 'viols' group and attending SummerKeys in Lubec, Maine.

Gillian is survived by her daughters, Meredith Browne of Salem Mass, and Alison Smith and her husband Mitchell, of Tenafly, NJ; her grandchildren, Morrigan Browne, Eliza Smith, Jacob Smith and Samuel Smith; her great-grandchildren, Oren and John Browne; as well as, her sisters Anne Adams, Judith Adams, Lauren Fortmiller, Ruth Duell, and brother Roderick Duell. She is also survived by her former husbands Jerry Bidlack, Kurt Heinzelman and Warner Barnes and her step-mother, Marie Louise Adams. She was pre-deceased by her brother, John LaFarge.

She lived for her family, friends, music and nature. She loved working in her garden and picking blueberries on Campobello Island, her heart's home. She was a genius at Scrabble, easily winning nearly every game while simultaneously doing a crossword puzzle. She was a dedicated supporter of social causes, animals, the environment and women's rights.

I was so sad to read about Gillian's death. We knew each other well when we were young (we were roommates for a while at Radcliffe), and she became even more interesting as she grew older.
My sympathies to her family.

Gill, you taught me a life-long appreciation of music and literature.
What a gift to this Buxton student and many others.

Gill was a person who left an imprint on every life she touched. I deeply regret not studying classics with such a wonderful teacher at Buxton. I wish I could share my love of the gamba with her and also show her how I now teach string classes here in Germany.

Gill taught me as much about being a feminist as she did about how to grow corn in my father's backyard. She was a huge supporter of my journalism career and encouraged me greatly. I could always be sure Gill would have something valuable to say and I always enjoyed her laughter and wisdom when we were together. My father, Warner, and I send our sincere condolences.

I remember Gill as a kind and wonderful teacher. I was her only Latin student at Buxton School from 1961-63. Among the books we read together in Latin were the New Testament, the Confessions of St. Augustine, and the Lives of the Twelve Caesars by Suetonius. Gill had a brilliant mind and she was a true intellectual who loved learning for the sake of learning. Ave atque vale, Gill!

Gill taught be Latin at Buxton in 1960-63. It was a delightful class with Alison and Meredith trying to nap, asking if they could wake up, and chocolate milk being delivered at least once a week. Thanks to her, we had a letter published in latin in the NYTimes, Pro Lingua Latina. And her tests were always interesting. My condolences to you on her passing. I am sorry not to have been in touch.

My sympathy to the family. Jesus taught us to pray at (Model Prayer) Matthew 6:9,10: "let your will take place,as in heaven, also on earth." Soon, when this prayer becomes a reality, we will never have to suffer such a loss again. May your heart be comforted with this promise and may God grant you inner peace to help you cope with your loss .
