Velma Huggins Obituary
Family-Placed Obituary
Velma R. Huggins, born January 3, 1917, to W.D. and Mattie Chalmers in Coryell County, Texas. She passed from this world on May 31, 2004, at Trinity Care Center, Round Rock, Texas, where she received loving care since January 10, 2002. Velma was married to Eld. Floyd C. Huggins on July 3, 1937, in Coryell County where they farmed prior to moving to the Lubbock area. They had three children and served diligently in the Primitive Baptist Church for many years. The two of them owned and operated Huggins Antiques of Lake Belton from 1955 until 1984. Velma was a resident of Gatesville, Texas, after the death of Elder Huggins and worked in the large circle of lifelong friends and family still residing in the area. She tirelessly assisted all who needed help of any kind, day or night. She was recognized by the Kiwanis as Senior Citizen of the year and received commendations from the Senior Citizen's Center, AARP and Meals on Wheels. She moved to Round Rock in 1989 to be near her children and grandchildren and continued to be extremely active with friends, neighbors and family until the onslaught of Alzheimers took away her independence and freedom. She was a member of Littlevine Primitive Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, after moving to this area and hated to miss a single opportunity to attend the church she had loved her entire life. She was preceded in death by her mother; father; stepmother, Lula Chalmers; sister, Leta Mae; brothers, Dallas Boyd Chalmers, Clifford Chalmers; her husband of 47 years; her eldest son, Charles Rae Huggins at age 50; her grandson, Floyd Ellis Hallmark at age 24; her nephew, John (Robby) Robinson and so many more she loved. Velma is survived by one daughter, Melba Logan; one son, Dale Huggins and his wife, Mary; grandsons, Bill Stewart and wife, Nancy, Dewayne Hallmark and wife, Sue, and Dale R. Huggins; granddaughters, Erica Harshaw and husband, John, all of Round Rock and Debbie Rogers and her husband, Eddy Paul (Bud) of Eddy, Charles Ray Huggins Jr., Mark Huggins, and Karen Huggins; great- grandchildren, Amanda Stewart, Jackie Stewart, Dustin Hallmark of Killeen, Kailey Harshaw, Brook Rogers of Eddy, and Amber Dean and her husband, Jason of Moody. She also leaves a very special niece, Barbara Robinson of Frisco; an equally special adopted son, Frank Arp and his wife, Robbie of Conroe; and an adopted granddaughter, Erica Ortega of Round Rock. There are no words to express the heartfelt gratitude we have for all the staff of Trinity Care Center for the loving, tender care given to Velma in the trying days and nights of her struggle. Taking care of and caring so deeply for her is entirely different. We know how much she was loved and that is beyond words.
