Gregory Metz Obituary

Gregory James Metz Greg Metz, 49, was born in Princeton, NJ, on February 9, 1961, and taken from us on March 31, 2010. Greg is survived by his wife Mary and his two daughters, Maggie, 26, and Claire, 23. He is also survived by his mother and father, Don and Barb Metz, and 5 brothers and sisters along with their spouses: Don and Sandy Metz, Terri and Gary Johnson, Pam and Andy Ancel, Ken and Terry Metz, and Suzanne and Dale Ellicott. Greg will also be missed by many nieces and nephews: Jenny and Kim Metz, Christopher and Adam Johnson, Katie, Elizabeth, and Joe Ancel, Alexis and Izabella Ellicott, and Lauren and Michael Metz. Greg was a 1978 graduate of Carmel High School and a graduate of Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Masters in English Literature. Greg spent over 20 years in the publishing industry and most recently was involved in business development for Follett Corporation. Greg's greatest love was his family and music. He inspired others with his thoughts and feelings that he expressed through his music - whether he was writing poems and songs or playing his guitar. Greg was a master storyteller starting with his earliest family favorite - "Death of an Apple". His sharp wit and sense of humor brightened the lives of those around him on a daily basis. His lifelong passion for adventure and exploring the outdoors began in his childhood home of Sylvan Lake and continued with his exploration of the Appalachian Trail. When Greg wasn't outdoors on his motorcycle, skiing or hiking - his greatest pleasure was hanging out, playing guitar and harmonica, playing pool, and just being around friends and family. The family will receive friends from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday, April 5, 2010, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will follow at 5:30 p.m. in the Chapel with Sister Dorothy Metz officiating. After Greg's firsthand, life changing experience on 9/11 and in honor of his commitment to helping others in need, as he did with hurricanes Katrina, Andrew and Ike, the family has requested that donations be made to the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org Go Cubs Go! Condolences may be made at www.cookwaldenforestoaks.com. http://www.redcross.org;www/.cookowaldenforestoaks.com

Mike and I are deeply grieved by Greg's passing. His wit, his energy, his capacity for loyalty, his business acumen, his love of nature, his appreciation of talent in all its forms (Greg, does that "it" need an apostrophe somewhere?) . . . We really miss you, and our love and sympathy are with the entire Metz family.

Mary, Maggie, and Claire - So incredibly sad for your loss. Your husband and father endeared himself to many from all walks of life. I have marvelous memories of our times at SIU, and it seems that wherever he went he touched many lives. We were all fortunate to know him.

Dear Don, Barb, Don, Terri, Pam, Ken, and Suzanne;

Where does one begin when remebering Greg? Playing volleyball at the park, swimming at the beach, fishing, skating or just hanging out. Or perhaps the night just a few years ago when Ken showed up at 9:00 pm with a surprise guest who made the many years since I had last seen him seem like just a few short weeks. Whatever memory comes to mind they are always happy. Being with Greg was sort of like a blind date; it was either going to be fun or funny! He will be truely missed.

Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Love always

To Greg's Family...

Dear Metz Family,

I want you to know that my heart is heavy for everyone in the family at this sudden tragedy. Greg was such a neat guy who never failed to make us laugh out here in Sylvan Lake. I remember the great times we had at the beach playing subs and torps around the pier. Greg always seemed to be able to hold his breath forever. I’ll never forget the first time I met Greg when I first moved out to Sylvan Lake during the winter of 1972. I was down at the beach throwing sticks and rocks out on to the ice when he and Bobby Bellinder came up to me and said “you better go out there and get that stuff off the ice”. We’ll the ice was like one inch thick and they both new I’d fall in. Thankfully they said they were just kidding, but sure scared the crap out of me at 9 years old. We had so much fun playing volleyball about every summer night at the lake. The Metz family always had an open door policy at their house which we all appreciated, but I never remember pitching in for all the food we ate. I pray that you draw close to the Lord who provides comfort during this painful time.

Mary, Maggie, and Claire, I am so sorry for your loss. Greg was one of the first people I worked with at HBJ and later at Holt. I will always remember him. He was so witty, bright, helpful, and approachable--a memorable person in every way.

Dear Mary, Maggie and Claire, your husband and father was an extraordinary person who leaves a legacy in each of you -- his creativity, his curiosity, his joy of living, his intrinsic attention to detail, his lively wit, his rapt ear for music, his genuine concern for the pain and adversity of others, his warm smile -- these things will go on in you and a little piece of Greg will thankfully always be with us. May God bless you and give you strength in this time of sorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Don, Barb, Don Jr., Terry, Pam, Ken, Suzanne and to Greg's immediate family whom I've never met: I could not believe this when I heard this. Greg was a terrifc guy. I have not seen Greg in probably over 30 plus years but he has left memorable impressions on me. Greg was a fun person to be around as was the rest of the Metz family. You are all missed hear in Sylvan Lake. I see Ken on Monday nights at volleyball and he often talks about his motorcycle adventures with Greg. Greg will be missed. I am sorry for your loss. I will pray for Greg and all of you. Love, Peter Graham and my family.

Dear Mary and Metz Family -
I'm going to spend today remembering Greg. What a fun, unique guy. We sat next to each other in Austin while working in "PubOps," and I'll remember his smile, passion (Cubs, Music, Biking, BBQ, Austin, etc.), and his deep command of the publishing industry. He knew everyone. He was always helpful and generous, and though he dated me by a few years, he was a young-at-heart friend that I looked forward to seeing every day. As the weather warms here in New England, and the fish start to run, I'm reminded of a once-in-a-lifetime fishing trip we enjoyed together a few years ago off Rhode Island; turns out, Greg was good luck too. I'm going to miss knowing he's out there.
God bless your family.

Hello to Greg's parents, wife, daughters, and siblings. I was very sorry to hear about Greg. Mary - I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am to hear about Greg and I know exactly what you are feeling. It is so hard to belive that our soulmates have been taken from us so soon in life. My strength to get through everyday comes from God and I will pray that he gives you the same strength. In reading the obituary Greg sounded alot like Danny - a love of storytelling and enjoying every minute with friends and family. As everyone has told me take your time to greive - it is quite a process...it is just coming up on 2 months for me and it still does not seem real. I hope we can connect and talk - I am here for you my friend!

I am so very very sorry to hear about Greg. He became my boss when HMH merged. I had known him a little bit before that, but started to spend some time with him after that. I grew to really like him. I just can't believe he's not with us anymore. My thoughts and prayers go out to you Mary and your children. I remember meeting you and your daughter, Maggie, at your house for a barbeque about 2 years ago. We played guitars for a while.
I am so sorry. This is a shock to me. Remember that he was a very decent and honest person to all the people he worked with.

I knew Greg through my brother and sister in law who lived in Austin. Through girls softball is when I first met him. As I got to know him I realized what a brilliant mind he had. "The Metz's lived in the house now owned by the Mihel family. Their close proximity to the beach and large family made that house the defacto hub of activity in the 70s and early 80s. His family personified everything that Sylvan Lake stood for; caring, sharing and service to community. Greg was the second oldest boy of the six Metz children. Greg's charisma, confidence and charm endeared him to everyone he met. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Metz family during this difficult time." - exerpt from Sylvan Lake communication
