Robert Smessaert Obituary

Robert Achiel Smessaert USAF (Ret.) Robert Achiel Smessaert, born August 11, 1931 in Mishawaka, Indiana passed away Sunday, July 10, 2011 in Austin, Texas. Robert retired from the Air Force after 24 years of service including 2 tours in Vietaf-Nam. He then worked for the Texas State Comptrollers Office for 10 years. After retiring from the state, Robert worked for Mallios & Associates law firm until he fully retired. He then became involved in his church, St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church. Robert was an avid golfer and missed it immensely when he became too ill to play. His wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his son, David Smessaert (Laura); daughters, Carol Casso (Fred) and Lori Ferrara (J.R.); and grandchildren, Shaun, Cody and Molly Casso, and Kristin and Casey Powell. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church, 126 W. Oltorf Street. A reception will follow services in the Annex of the Church. The family would like to thank St. David's South and Hospice Austin for their care during our father's last hours. Condolences may be made at www.cookwaldenforestoaks.com.

My condolences to the Smessaert Family. I met Bob when we worked at Mallios & Associates. Bob became my good friend and he holds a very special place in my heart. He always gave me good advise. I will never forget his kindness and wisdom. It was a privilege and a blessing to have had him in my life. My thoughts and prayers for his family and friends. I know he's in a better place. Rest in peace my beloved friend.

I worked at Greystar South Congress where I had the pleasure of having Bob as a resident. It's hard in our business sometimes to create personal relationships with residents, but Bob made it hard NOT to! He always brought us the paper and humored us with stories from his Air Force days. He even took me to breakfast for my birthday. When he left our office each day to go to church, he would tell us all "I'll be praying for you." They weren't just words. I believe the priest at St. Ignatius probably knows us by name. My condolences to Bob's family.

Dear Cousins and Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you, as they have always
been. Your Father has always held a most special place in my
heart. My memories of him go back many, many years . I'm now
63yrs old and I have the most precious and wonderful memories
of both he and your Mom. They were so special to my Mom and
Dad and our entire family. Too bad our weather here in Indiana
is so damn cold as your Dad would say !! If not for that, all of
you would probably be living here! There are worse things than
death as you've probably experienced in dealing with Dad's
illness. He has rightfully claimed his reward in Heaven and He
will always be remembered and loved.

Blessings to you and yours,

Marlene, Dan and Family,

.
