Harriet SHAFFER Obituary

SHAFFER, Harriet Heep
Henderson "Hatsy"
Harriet "Hatsy" Heep Henderson Shaffer, 67, passed away March 5, 2015, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. A private family memorial service was held March 14, 2015, at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in Buda, Texas, followed by burial at Live Oaks Cemetery In Manchaca, Texas.

Hatsy was born to John P. and Mary Lou (Heep) Henderson in New Orleans, Louisiana, May 16, 1947. Although born in Louisiana, (May 16, 1947), Hatsy was a true Texan in heart and by blood. She grew up San Antonio, Texas, and among the rolling hills and Live Oak trees found at her beloved Grandfather's (the late Herman F. Heep) cattle ranch and dairy farm. Hatsy attended St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio and then the prestigious La Châtelaine School in Gstaad, Switzerland. Hatsy then attended Greenbrier College for Women in Lewisburg, West Virginia, and while there, she fell in love with the beauty of the Allegheny Mountains and Greenbrier Valley, an area she would call home decades later.

After college Hatsy returned to Texas, where she opened a series of children's stores in Dallas, Texas. Later in Richmond, Virginia, she opened a women's clothing store, "Hatsy's on Madison Place". When she retired from the clothing business, a love of interior design, gardening, and her grandchildren would keep her busy later in life.

Hatsy is survived by husband, David E. Shaffer of White Sulphur Springs, WV; her sisters, Elizabeth H. Urban and husband, Carl, of Austin, TX, Kathleen H. Adkins and husband, Ward, of Houston, TX, her five children; John H. Shires of New Orleans, LA, Kevin T. Shires and wife, Amanda, of Atlanta, GA, daughter, Anne Holladay Shires of Austin, TX; daughter, Amanda L Featherstone and husband, Andrew, of Richmond, VA; son, Edward R Lannon III and wife, Erin, of Destin, FL; and her nine grandchildren, Clark and Elyse Shires; Austin, Foster and Sybil Shires; Caroline and Eleanor Tatum Featherstone; and Edward and Oliver Lannon.

Hatsy adored being a grandmother, and as such, memorials may be made in her name to Autism Speaks, or a local chapter of Autism Society.
