Balie Griffith Obituary

GRIFFITH, Balie Jackson Age 88, died peacefully October 29th, 2020, at his home in Austin surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 18th, 1931, in Brownwood, Texas, he was the son of Balie Lafayette and Elizabeth Grace Griffith. Balie graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1953 and then started his career at Firestone. After seven years and rising to the level of store manager, he took over the family owned Firestone Store in Odessa, Texas. Soon thereafter, he added partners Harold Crawford and Perry Rose. Together, Griffith, Crawford, and Rose formed a partnership called GCR. The company eventually comprised 91 stores and was spread throughout Texas. It had become Firestone's largest independent dealer. In 1987, GCR was sold to Firestone. After establishing himself as a successful entrepreneur, Balie invested in Texas commercial properties. He was always a firm believer in philanthropy. It was his greatest joy to use his resources to uplift disadvantaged children through education. In 1985, Balie and his wife Beverly founded and endowed the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Scholarship Program of Austin. The program achieves a 90 percent graduation rate for its at-risk students and has provided more than 2000 students with scholarships for higher education. In 1998, Balie and Beverly started AVANCE in Austin. AVANCE uses a unique two generation educational program for immigrant families with toddlers. AVANCE effectively breaks the poverty cycle by making parents the first educators of their children. Since then, AVANCE Austin has enabled thousands of participants to achieve a brighter future. Balie also served on the Advisory Board of the Trust for Public Land, and he and his wife Beverly chaired the Stewardship for the Union Congregational Church in Crested Butte, Colorado. In his spare time, Balie enjoyed carpentry. He built his first cabin at the North San Gabriel River and later a second cabin on the Pedernales River. Balie's gentle and loving spirit will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife Beverly of 58 years, their son Stephen and his wife Stefanie, his grandchildren Elenor, Kimberly, Balie, and Leah, and his sister Anne. A Memorial Service for close family members will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin on November 1st. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to AVANCE (AvanceAustin.org), Trust for Public Land (TPL.org/denver), or the Union Congregational Church in Crested Butte (uccrestedbutte.org).

Avid Philanthropist! Magnanimous Patriarch! Cheerful Giver! Kind-spirited Diplomat! These words represent the essence of who he was on this side but does not fully embody all that he was to us. What Mr. Griffith did in 88 years of life is immeasurable! His philanthropic acts allowed me to further my education. Each year of our undergraduate and post graduate years, he provided me and my two siblings academic incentive scholarships. Each of us pursued and received advanced degrees. We thank him in spirit for all that he did for our family. The memories of him will serve as a bridge between this life and the next. We will continue to light and carry his torch of philanthropy until we meet again.

Beverly, My heartfelt condolences to Stephen, Stephanie, and all of the grandkids.
I am so heartbroken to learn the sad news of Balie.
I wanted to share in a few lines how I met Balie and his family. I first arrived in Austin to open the AVANCE - Austin Chapter as Executive Director. His guidance on the finance side of the institution to me personally was invaluable and made me feel at ease as the Executive Director. Balie was the reason that I decided to go back to school and receive an MBA. Balie's initial involvement with the board is the reason AVANCE-Austin is the successful organization it is today.
He was the most generous, unconditional, and caring person I have met to this day.
His legacy of generosity I know has been passed down to his son Stephen and the next generations. He will be greatly missed by many.

Few come to this world and are able to show they have a heart that shines like the sun.
Con cariño,
Rosalia Castañeda-Gonzalez

I only met Balie and Beverly a couple of times, but their philanthropic hearts, generosity, care for the community, and love for each other was unmistakable. Sending warmest thoughts and prayers to the entire Griffith family.

My condolences to Beverly, Stephen, Stephanie, Anne, and Balie's grandchildren. I knew Balie when I worked at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Balie always had a smile on his face whether discussing his favorite charities, paddling down the river, or listening to music. He was a wonderful father and husband. He and Beverly passed on their generosity to Stephen, leaving a legacy for generations in more ways than most. I remember that he LOVED the Big Brothers Big Sisters Scholarship Ceremony made possible by the family's generosity and Beverly's creativity and wisdom. He was always there to see the high school seniors graduating and the 7th graders being promised their incentive to graduate - an automatic scholarship! Balie was not just one of the favorite donors I ever worked with, but also one of my favorite people I have met in my life. I am sorry I lost touch with him and the family when I moved. May we all remember his spirit and use his example to make the world a better place.

Thank you for your service to youth in our community. As someone who worked with the BBBS scholarship program I saw year after year the difference that you and Beverly made in the lives of the scholarship recipients. This wonderful legacy will live on. God bless.

Balie was one of my first mentors. I started my career in the first GCR accounting office in the 70's and 80's. Balie was one of my bosses, so sharp about business, while being so kind about people. He tutored me on both, and I am still grateful. I particularly remember him buying a silver Porsche sportscar, and when he saw my obvious enthusiasm for it, he MADE me drive it! I was terrified - and thrilled. I was not at all surprised to read about his wonderful legacy, sad he had passed, and happy that he was at home and surrounded by people he loved and who loved him. He was quite a guy.

I knew Balie through Boy Scouts Troop 9 . He really helped us out by sponsoring camp outs at his ranch and an annual donation to Troop 9 treasury. I called on his partner Harold Crawford in Abilene , Texas at his Firestone store. I knew Balies dad from the Firestone store in Odessa. His son Stephen was a member of Troop 9. Our sympathy to Beverly ,Stephen ,Stephenie and family.
