Andrew Cherry, 90, of Hastings, died to this life on June 28, 2009, at the Earl B. Hadlow Center in Jacksonville. He awaits the resurrection of his body as promised by God in I Cor. 15:52.
Anthony was born on July 15, 1918, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the second of three sons born to Russian immigrants Andro Z. and Violet (Larmonov) Chetirbok. He grew up in Gary, Ind., and settled in south Florida following World War II, moving to Hastings in 2005. During WW II, he served as staff sergeant in the 94th Infantry, Company M of the 376th Regiment in the U.S. Army, surviving four major campaigns in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He worked as an A.C. mechanic for many years for Broward County Mass Transit, retiring in 1986. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bonita Cherry; his son, Paul, and his dearly loved and deeply devoted daughter-in-law, Jennifer; and grandchildren, Anthony, Andrew, Samantha, Madison and James.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 2009, at St. Johns Family Funeral Home, 385 SR 207, with the Rev. Billy German, officiating. A visitation will be held Monday morning at the funeral home from 10 until the hour of the service. Graveside services with military honors will follow at 2:30 p.m. on Monday at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
