A. Pfister Obituary
Remembering Dan.
Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Dan graduated from South Broward High School in 1954. An outstanding athlete he signed with the Kansas City Athletics in 1957 and pitched to some of MLB's all-time greats until 1964 with time out midway to serve two years in the U.S. Army. After a career cut short by injury, Dan returned to Hollywood, Florida and joined the fire department where he worked until his retirement in 1994. Softball became his passion. In fast-pitch softball, Dan and his team twice beat the great Eddie Feiner (King and his Court) and in slow-pitch the fire department teams won the National Championships in Bowie, Md four times. Senior softball brought many accolades and in 1997 Dan was inducted into the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame. He was the baseball Coach for Biscayne College and well known for his culinary skills as a "Firehouse" chef. Dan is survived by his two sons, Danny and Scott, his daughter-in-law Laurie and his granddaughter Savannah.

A MOMENT IN TIME -
The Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves played their Spring Training games at Municipal Stadium from 1963 to 1997, while the Montreal Expos later played there from 1969 to 1972 and from 1981 to 1997.
The stadium was constructed in 1962 to replace midtown Connie Mack Field, which had been the West Palm Beach Spring Training home of the Philadelphia and Kansas City Athletics from 1946 to 1962.
The first game was played on Saturday 9 March 1963, under overcast skies and extremely high winds which blew sand from the outfield areas, directly toward the seating area, which were not as yet totally landscaped at that time. Mayor C. Ben Holleman threw out the first ball and the Kansas City Athletics defeated the Milwaukee Braves 3-0 in front of a medium-sized crowd of 3,265 fans. Warren Spahn started for Milwaukee and was the losing pitcher, while Dan Pfister was the winner for the Athletics.
I was there on that day and remember all whIch occurred as if it was yesterday.

Danny and Scott I know this is late but, I just found out about your wonderful Dad. Dan was an amazingly Great person Growing up during the Softball years he played for many years for my Dad. We all including both of you would go to many tournaments and we had a blast. I´ll never forget the cookouts at your house your Dad was a Great Chef. He is missed by me and NEVER FORGOTTEN RIP DAN

My condolences. There are not many words at a time like this, but we can pour out our hearts to God, whom is a refuge for us. When anxieties overwhelmed us, God can comforted and soothed us.

Not all families look the same. My sister Susan was 20 when I was born. I was like her and Dan's first "rug-rat" before their boys came along. At the age of 6 or 7 I spent the summer with Dan and my sister in Birmingham, Alabama while Dan played ball for the Birmingham Barons. I was at the park for every practice and game. I even have a home video of Dan taking pointers from Joe DiMaggio! Dan taught young men baseball alongside legends like Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians. While in Key Largo, Dan ran into one of his idols, Ted Williams, and they drank and talked for hours. I lived in the Keys and Dan came down as often as he could. Dan was a fire fighter in Hollywood, Florida, a softball lover, and a family man. Dan was the closest I ever had to a father. He loved my boys and wife, loved fishing on his boat in Marathon. He even donated thousands of dollars of equipment to our youth club. Dan taught me to drive, skin dive, build fences, and put in sprinklers. About two years ago, my wife and I and my youngest son Josh went to see Dan at his favorite pub. It was a great visit. Dan was my brother-in-law, my larger-than-life father figure, my mentor, and my friend.

When we got the call from Scott that his Dad passed away, we were in shock. We were actually in Las Vegas on a much needed vacation. We had been to Vegas many times with Dan and Susan. Dan always liked to play the dollar slots, the lucky sevens. We immediately left our machine and went and found his machine and played it. Many years we combined a trip to Vegas with a ski vacation to Brian Head, UT. Dan and Susan owned property there and we loved going with them. We met Dan 45 years ago when by chance he selected our son Dickie to be on the team he was coaching which included his son Scott. Dickie and Scott became great friends and Dick, who also played professional baseball and Dan became life-long friends. Susan and I also became great friends. Our families from that time on were inseparable spending many holidays together. Many weekends we were invited to go to their vacation home in Key Largo where all of our kids learned to love the water. Uncle Dan taught them to fish and enjoy life. Susan was gracious to invite us to stay with her family for a month when our newly built home was not ready and we had to leave our old home. Danny was nice enough to give us his room and he slept on the couch. Dan and I both enjoyed cooking and many times I would do the baking and he would do the cooking. Dan had a heart of gold and if anyone of his friends needed anything he was there in a minute. We will never forget you and will miss you forever,

About 20 years ago I was in Florida visiting my brother. He played in a weekly pickup game of modified fast-pitch softball (no windmill but otherwise as fast as you can pitch underhand). There were players from 18-65 years old playing. Some were pretty good. But the best player, by far, was the 65-year old. It was Dan Pfister. He played third base. One of the 18 year olds hit a shot down the 3rd base line. It hit the ground a little to the right and about 10 feet in front of Pfister so it was one of those nasty half-hop balls. He fielded it cleanly and threw the kid out by 10 feet. So smooth and an amazing arm. He also hit a home run that cleared the fence (typical slow pitch distance) by about 75 feet. By major league standards, he wasn't a star. But he was so much better than everyone else there. That helped me realize how much better MLB players are than us mere mortals.
Though that was the only time I met him, he seemed to be a real quality person. My sympathies to the family and his friends.

Danny was the best, I met him when I was fresh out of college and moved here to work at the Yankee Baseball School in Hollywood and then the All-American Baseball school...He really took care of me and watched out for me...He was great to work for/with...I was just starting out and he helped me both on and off the job. I could never repay him for all his help. When I was coaching high school and grade school baseball, he never hesitated to volunteer his time and effort. His chef skills were legendary as I was invited to his home and his home away from home, the firehouse, many times for a scrumptious meal. Danny and his family went out of there way to help along and I will be forever grateful. Danny and Scott, your Pop was the BEST, none better. My thoughts and prayers go out to you guys.

I met Dan in 1970 playing softball at Dowdy Field
We competed against each other through 1973
Besides being an excellent Player Dan was a great teammate and person
His cooking skills with the Hollywood Fire Department were legendary
In 2004 I was Coaching a PAL Youth Baseball Team and Dan volunteered to work with our Pitchers
Growing up in Miami I wanted to be a Professional Baseball Player but I settled for being around a Major League Pitcher who played four seasons with Kansas City before an injury ended his career
Although we competed in slow pitch softball Dan also pitched fast pitch and he twice beat the legendary King and His Court
Most important Dan was a 30 year fire fighter with Hollywood
Thank you Dan for your service
Dan now is playing softball both fast pitch and slow pitch in Heaven
Although he is in a better place he will be missed by all who knew him
