Carl McMurray Obituary

Carl Dempsey McMurray, Jr.

Carl Dempsey McMurray, Jr., 68, of Tallahassee, died Wednesday May 8th.

He was born to the late Carl and Thelma McMurray on October 2nd, 1944 in Fayetteville, NC, moving to Orlando, FL in his early childhood. Carl served in the United States Air Force after high school, learning Chinese in order to listen to and translate radio transmissions in Okinawa. Carl received a BA in Anthropology in 1970, and a MA in Archaeology in 1975, both from the University of Florida.

Carl worked as a Florida archaeologist for over 30 years, first for the Florida Department of Historic Preservation and, subsequently, for the Department of Transportation. Even in his retirement he continued to enjoy his interest in Native American archaeology of the southern United States. He enjoyed riding horses and motorcycles, bird watching, camping, collecting firearms and knives, and the outdoors in general.

He is survived by two sisters; Dale McMurray, of Cottonwood, CA; and Marcia McMurray, of Orlando, FL; three children; Cristin A. McMurray (Joseph), of Cambridge, MA; Justin S.W. McMurray (Barbara), of Tampa, FL; and Alison A. McMurray (Syraj), of Gainesville, FL; and one grandson, Myles A. Syed.

A memorial service will be planned and announced at a later time, in accordance with Carl's wishes. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Retirement Home for Horses, Inc., P.O. Box 2100, Alachua, FL 32616-2100 or to the St Mark's Refuge Association, Inc., P.O. Box 368, St. Mark's, FL 32355.

Carl McMurray was one of the finest and funniest men that I have known. We worked together in the Division of Historical Resources and remained friends for many decades. It always felt good to know that Carl was out there in Miccosukee sitting on his porch steps looking out in quiet retreat after he left state government. Now that I have found out that he is no longer with us, there is a feeling of great loss. I can still see him playing bocce ball out behind the archives building.

Carl and I were fellow graduate students at the University of Florida, studying archaeology in the early 1970s. We shared many experiences, in and out of the trenches, and I was always glad I knew him. I send my condolences to his siblings and children.

A good friend, a great mind, and a warm spirit characterize our friend, Carl. He is missed. It was a pleasure to meet him during work days at FDOT and a privilege to continue the friendship with an occasional lunch together. I will long remember our last conversation at the rehab center and many before that. May God bless his children and grandchild in this life for Carl was certainly proud of each of them.
