Robert MacNamara Obituary

Age 93 passed away peacefully on Friday, February 8, 2019. Fr. Mac was born December 30, 1925 in Elmira, a son of Charles and Charlotte (Feehan) MacNamara. He is predeceased by his sisters and brother-in-law: Mary Beatrice and Harold Lownsberry, Margaret MacNamara, and brother: J. Joseph MacNamara. Fr. Mac is survived by nieces: Lynne Thompson of Colorado, Ellen McGurgan of Florida, Anne Lyman of Alabama; fellow priests; good friends the McIntosh family; along with many other friends too numerous to name. Fr. Mac was a 1944 graduate of Elmira Catholic High School. He then attended St. Andrew's and St. Bernard's seminaries in Rochester in preparation for the priesthood. He was ordained June 2, 1951 by Bishop James E. Kearney at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. Early assignments took him to Hornell, Pittsford, Rochester, Ithaca and Irondequoit. In 1970 he was appointed Pastor of St. Ann's Church, Hornell continuing on at St. Vincent de Paul in Corning and then St. John of Rochester in Perinton. Fr. Mac retired in June 1992….officially becoming "The Retired Shepherd". Retirement brought him back to his home town where he took up residence at St. Mary Our Mother Rectory, Horseheads, then moving to St. Mary's Rectory, Elmira. He never really retired. Fr. Mac assisted the local parishes wherever he was needed, right up until the past year. Fr. Mac was very proud of the recent title given him by Bishop Salvatore Matano. "Dean of Priests, Most Senior Retired Priest, Rochester Diocese". He enjoyed going to the theater and football. The quintessential University of Notre Dame football fan, Fr. Mac made annual treks to South Bend, the last one being in September 2017. He loved Notre Dame and would have a countdown of days from the end of one season to the beginning of the next. Calling hours will be on Thursday, February 14, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., St. Mary's Church, 224 Franklin Street, Elmira. A Vigil Service will follow at 7:00 p.m. Fr. Mac's Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Mary's Church on Friday, February 15, 2019, 12:00 noon. Committal prayer and interment will follow at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. One of Fr. Mac's favorite quotes from Idylls of the King – The Passing of Arthur…."More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of." Rest in peace, Father.

Officers and members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians will gather at St. Mary's Church on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to conduct a service for our brother, Fr. Mac.

Remembering Fr. Mac on his anniversary. Soon after my last post, my Mom passed away within days of her 97th birthday, and I was able to be there with her at the hospital. I recall driving home and thinking - "Mom, you're at peace and going to work in a new way - please pray for me and our loved ones." I know Mr. Mac is doing likewise. :). I call my relationship to him "student" because he taught me so much through his homilies and conversations.

Dear family and friends of Father Mac,
I just learned of Father Mac's passing, being homebound taking care of my Mother who is going on 97.
I recall meeting Father Mac in the early '90s while he was walking the grounds at St. Mary Our Mother in Horseheads, having my twins on the playground there, as well as at events and Masses. We just exchanged hellos, as I respected his time of solitude and enjoying the grounds, and his walk. Whenever our paths crossed, I sensed his great kindness and peace, it really made my day that way too. Our encounters resonate in my heart. God bless Father Mac and all of you who care about and for him.

Father MacNamara was a priest's priest. He was quiet, unassuming, and edifying without trying to be.

Knowing Fr. Mac was a heavenly pleasure. He represented the Catholic faith in the best of ways. God bless him for that. I only got to know him when he came to St. Mary's. He remembered my name right away and always addressed me by name and nickname, Bernadette or Bunny. He certainly had a peaceful way about him.
I do agree that looking at him was like looking at the face of the Lord. May you rest in peace.

Father Mac, helped me though the death of my precious son. He came with me to the St. Mary's Cemetery to bless my Joey's grave. I will never forget your sincere kindness and your deep faith, you helped me hold on tight to my faith at the hardest time in my life. Not enough thank yous in the world.
At daily mass he would sometimes end with a joke. Loved the one about St. Patrick in a bar in Ireland. A true gentlemen and amazing priest.
You have now seen the face of God.

I will miss Fr. MacNamara. He was wonderful. I loved listening to him. His sermons were the old fashioned kind that I always appreciated. They were to the point and left you with a better understanding of our faith. He was a true priest and a great man. I'll miss his voice.

Father Mac was kind man, and a priest's priest. If anyone had truly found his or her vocation, it was Father. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. God bless Father Mac.

Fr. Mac was a dear friend of my sister and parents from the early 1970's in Hornell. Following Carol's passing in 1995, my parents would stop at Horseheads to see him on their trips to New Hampshire. Celine and I didn't have the pleasure of meeting him in person until 2011. On our trips East in 2014 and 2016 the stop in Elmira was always a highlight of the trip. He ended every phone call with, "When are you coming back again?" He was a special person in our lives for almost 50 years.
God Bless him.

Father McNamara was all I thought a priest should be. He was a delight to the students of Saint Ann's school. He joined in recess and treated every one with dignity, laughter, and respect. He has earned his heavenly reward. Marilyn Smith Batra

Father Mac - such a dear friend! So many remembrances: the parties, the celebration of birthdays and holidays (especially St. Patrick's Day), the shared meals, and the list goes on! He was a devoted priest until the end as his last words to me were, Pray for me. I will pray for you. He was indeed a good and holy man who will be deeply missed.
