Samuel Miller Obituary

Samuel "Sam" Earl Miller I, 76, of Gulf Shores, Alabama passed away on September 8, 2020.

Born on August 22, 1944 in Falls Creek, Pennsylvania, he was the youngest of four children.

He graduated from DuBois High School in 1962, later attending and graduating from Widener College. Moving to Louisville, Kentucky in 1967, he worked for Ford Motor Company. In 1970, he purchased, along with his brother, Drennan Education Equipment Company. They grew that into a national organization that also included Commonwealth Fabricators, several Best Western hotels and a waterfront boat condominium in Naples, Florida.

Very active in both tennis and golf, he was a long-time member, supporter and volunteer of United States Tennis Association (USTA); Persimmon Ridge Golf Course and Gulf Shores Golf Course where he is the record holder for most "Hole in One" shots.

He was involved with several charitable organizations and is one of the founders of Raise a Racquet, an organization that was started to give children in Louisville access to tennis. He also gave free tennis lessons around Louisville and Raise a Racquet has since grown to support all tennis in Kentucky as a charitable foundation.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elizabeth Miller, his brother, Robert Nicholas Miller and his sister, Sally Miller Cowan.

Sam is survived by his wife and the love of his life of 57 years, Judith "Judi" Miller, of Gulf Shores, AL; a daughter, Melissa Miller Chastain (Robert) of Anchorage, KY; a son, Samuel "Sam" Miller, II (Sherry) of Prospect, KY; sister, Jayne Shaffer of Ft. Myers, FL; and grandchildren, Austin, Sarah and Rebecca Chastain, Sam Miller, III and Taylor Scott.

The family will be holding a Celebration of Life memorial service in Gulf Shores, AL later this fall.

Always remember Sam as my best friend in high school and my partner in football, basketball and track. I will always remember the many double dates he shared with Sally and me and how happy I was that he stood beside me when Sally and I were married.

Hello Judi...Mary Hatfield told me Sam had passed away and I was very saddened. Sam was one of the finest men I have ever known. When you were on the southern board and in meetings, Sam and I always found time to talk about things. He was wise about so many things and always took an interest in how things were going and always offered his help. I filled in a couple of times when needed on the golf course and it was always fun playing with Sam, he was a fierce competitor. I believe I am a better person from advice/input Sam gave me. I feel very fortunate to have known Sam and you as well. Take care, bill ozaki

Dear Mrs Miller, Missy, Sam and family. I wanted to say and tell you , how very very sorry and saddened I am for your loss. I have to admit, I pretty much fell out of my chair when I saw and read about Mr Miller/ your Dad in the paper ( I did not know). For whatever reason, I never did call him by his first name, it was always Mr Miller. There were so many countless times coming over to the house on Nassau, so many times parking in the same spot, way off to the left, same place Rob parked his car and for whatever reason, Mr Miller decided to back into my car and then several years later, back into Rob’s car. Funny, I still find the humor in that. I am sure your hearts are weighing heavy and are trying to somehow reel yourselves back in, but, I truly believe he’s out and about playing a game of tennis, walking a beach somewhere or just tooling around town. My heart aches for you all, please take care. With Deepest Sympathy and much Love to you all. Lee Anne Berry
