Edward Schell Obituary

Groton - Edward Timothy Schell, 90, of Groton Long Point, beloved husband of 62 years to Carol E. (Daily) Schell, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at home.

Born in New York, N.Y. he was the son of the late Herbert and Abigail (O'Leary) Schell and resided in Groton Long Point since 1987. Growing up in New York, Ed attended Poly Prep High School in Brooklyn. He continued his education at Colgate University class of 1943 earning a bachelor's degree in English. He was a U.S. Navy lieutenant aboard the USS Quincy, honorably discharged in 1946. Ed worked as a director of marketing in the textile industry for over 40 years, retiring in 1986.

Ed enjoyed sailing, politics, sports (especially the NY Giants) and reading. He was also an accomplished writer and was proud of editing a book titled, "World War II Memoirs, Colgate University class of 1943" which is currently in the college library. Ed was a devout catholic and he eventually self published a book "In the Pursuit of God."

In addition to his wife, he leaves six children, Amy Foster and her husband, Bill, Toni Coleman and her husband, Frank, Barbara Mateer and her husband, Diehl, Ce-Ce Schell, Edward T. Schell Jr. and his wife, Enid, and Larry Schell and his wife, Pam; sixteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Thomas John Schell.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at St. Mary's Church, 95 Main St., Stonington. Burial with full military honors will be held in Westbury, N.Y. at the Holy Rood Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360 (www.hospicesect.org).
