John Bowen Obituary

Mystic - John Brian Bowen, 64, passed away peacefully Sept. 25, 2020, in Farmington surrounded by his close family. He was a loving husband to his wife Debbie; and a role model and teacher to his son Patrick and daughter Casey; as well as a cherished son, beloved brother, and uncle. He was a fearless nautical navigator of the Long Island Sound during memorable summers spent in Mystic, an avid Boston Red Sox fan (through thick and thin), and an engaged listener who was always ready to provide thoughtful encouragement and advice.

Born Dec. 20, 1955, in New Haven and raised in Milford, John developed a passion for all things nautical and often recalled the many different used boats he bought and fixed during his youth. In addition to these projects, John fondly remembered his first jobs including being a dock boy at the Milford Yacht Club, a water ski instructor, and working at Nesbits, a local country store. Upon graduating from high school, John took his academic pursuits to the University of Connecticut where he majored in Accounting. While there, he had numerous jobs which included serving as an RA, a switchboard operator and a school linen service representative, memories he frequently reminisced about.

After UConn, John was employed by Arthur Andersen where he obtained his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license, followed by his position as Executive Vice President at Loos and Company. After leaving Loos, he was employed at the Robert E. Morris Company for over 30 years where he held the positions of Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer. A believer in the phrase, "if you love your job, you never work a day in your life" John valued his time at the Robert E. Morris Company. However, his most prized positions were as a father and a husband.

In addition to his wife and children, John is survived by his siblings, Richard, Robert, Jeffrey, Susan, and Jo-Ann; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Constance Gaye Bowen.

Although John spent over 32 years battling Multiple Sclerosis, he never let it get in the way of living his life to the fullest, which was truly an inspiration to those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Donations can be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in his memory.

Wishing John the peace and comfort he deserves. Knowing John from a slightly different perspective than most other posts I've read here, yet seeing others reference him as a mentor is consistent with how I viewed him as well. While I wasn't able to have as many conversations with him as I would have liked, I always enjoyed the conversations I was able to have, and walked away with a new bit of wisdom or a new perspective on a topic.

John will be missed. Yet, he also will live on in subtle echos not only within my life, but clearly within the lives of many others as well. Sail on buddy.

Our families have been friends for about 28 years now. John was one of the nicest, friendliest and most genuine people we have known. He never let his MS get in the way of life.

Our hearts are breaking for Debbie, Patrick and Casey. May your memories help you through your grief.

I am so sad to hear of John’s passing. I worked with John at Morris Group for almost 20 years and he was one of the best human beings I have had the pleasure to know and work with. The world has lost an incredible man and heaven has gained a hero. Rest in peace, John.

My heart goes out to Debbie, Patrick and Casey. May your loving memories of John comfort you during this sad time.

John was my mentor in my career at The Robert E. Morris Company. He encouraged me and promoted me to spread my wings to move into new positions within the company. I am also flooded with memories of Benihana’s, Red Sox limousine trips, egging cars from my front porch, etc. He was also very supportive of my fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society.
My condolences to Debbie, Patrick and Casey. Rest well John.
