Thomas Kahrl Obituary
Tom was born Oct. 4, 1934, in Boston, the son of George M. and Faith J. Kahrl. He attended schools in Elmira, N.Y., and The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut. While at Harvard University, he majored in engineering, belonged to the A.D. Club and the Hasty Pudding Club, played varsity football, was a member of the Krokodillos, and was an NROTC cadet.
After college, he served as chief engineer aboard the USS McNair (DD 679). Following his naval service, he was accepted into the General Electric Management Training Program.
In 1963, he married Anita S. Bleecker, settled in Boston, and earned a degree at the Boston University School of Law. He began his legal career in patent law at Fish & Richardson and moved to Pittsburgh with Mellon Bank where he was widowed.
He married Randie Powers in 1989, moved to Falmouth, and opened a patent law practice.
Tom enjoyed his summers in coastal Maine, was an avid bird hunter, loved to sing, play squash and tennis. Tom and Randie took up tandem cycling, crossing the United States twice, once for fun and once for charity in support of alcohol awareness.
Besides his first wife, he was predeceased by his older brother, Stanley J. Kahrl.
He is survived by his children, Thomas A. Kahrl Jr. of London, U.K., and Marguerite B. Kahrl of Chiaverano, Italy; by his brother, Fred J. Kahrl of Woolwich, Maine; also by a step-son, Steven Miele of Nashville, Tenn.; his sister-in-law, Julia G. Kahrl, of Arrowsic, Maine; and by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2009, in the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme.
Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Old Lyme, is handling the arrangements.
