Rocky was 86 years old, having been born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on June 27, 1919 to Marjorie and N. Otis Rockwood.
Rocky was a graduate of the Hotchkiss School in 1937, Princeton University in 1941 and Columbia Law School in 1947. He served during World War II from 1942 until 1945 as a Major in the 9th Division Field Artillery, receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
On Feb. 1, 1945. he married Patricia White Rockwood. They resided in Scarborough and Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., until 1980, in Mystic until 1986 and thereafter in Boca Raton and Delray Beach, Fla. Rocky practiced law for 35 years, primarily at his own firms, Lawler & Rockwood and its successors from 1951 until 1964, and Rockwood, Edelstein & Duffy from 1964 until his retirement in 1981.
Rocky was an avid golfer and loved the water. He was active at Sleepy Hollow Country Club and Shattemuc Yacht Club in Westchester County, Misquamicut Golf Club, Wadawanuch Yacht Club, Mason's Island Yacht Club and The Stonington Country Club in the Mystic area, and Delray Beach Club and The Little Club in Delray Beach.
He relished being involved with the community. He served for years as an officer and director of Phelps Memorial Hospital, Tarrytown, N.Y., and a vestryman at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Scarborough, N.Y. In Florida, he was an officer and director of the Friends of the Boca Pops, an officer of the Royal Palm Improvement Association and a member of the Governing Council at Harbour's Edge.
He is survived by his son, William O. Rockwood Jr. and his wife, Marian, and granddaughters, Lindsay and Kathryn, of Westport and Mystic, and his daughter, Martha R. Hendrick and her husband, Stan, of Livingston, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at Mason's Island Yacht Club on Saturday, November 5 at noon. Internment will be private at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
