THOMAS MOORE Obituary

THOMAS SUTTON MOORE Memorial services for Thomas Sutton Moore will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church in McAllen. Tom Moore was born in McAllen on March 30, 1943 to Lewis and Emmy Lou Moore. He grew up with his two older brothers, Dick and Mike in a home in what was the outskirts of town, on Pecan Avenue. A dedicated Boy Scout and later Eagle Scout, Tom participated in the American Field Service foreign exchange program and traveled to Norway in 1960. Tom was and remains the most celebrated president of a Senior Class at McAllen High School. He graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism. Tom worked as a fieldsman for L. H. Moore Canning Co in McAllen contracting and harvesting vegetables from south Texas to the Texas panhandle before beginning a long career in printing in 1970 with a controlled circulation weekly newspaper in Houston. He later owned and operated a subscription weekly in Cheney, Kansas, and started a weekly in Goddard, Kansas, before returning to the Valley to open T. S. Moore Printing Co. in 1976. He owned and operated T.S. Moore Printing for over 30 years before his retirement in 2010. To this day a handful of his original, dedicated and steadfast employees continue to operate the print shop, which still carries his name. In addition to being known as the light in any room he entered, Tom graciously sought to find ways to help others in his family and in the community. He gave his time to a number of organizations including, First Presbyterian Church in McAllen, Rotary International, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scout Troop 37 and various booster clubs. In addition to being a charter member of the Rotary Club of McAllen North in 1984 and serving as president (1992-1993), he served as Rotary District 5930 Governor (2007-2008). He also served as Team Leader for the Rotary Group Study Exchange to South Africa in 2001 and participated in the Rotary Friendship Exchange to Sweden (2002) and Australia (2012.) He and his wife Carol have a blended family of five children, ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Family, church, community service and education remained important to Tom. Tom is survived by his wife, Carol Hall Moore of Georgetown, Texas and Perham, Minnesota; his daughters, Melissa Moore Goebel (Thomas) of Trophy Club, Texas, Natalie Kay Moore of Austin, Texas, Laura Smith ( Randy) of Stafford, Virginia; his son, Frederick Thomas Moore (Mende) of Cary, North Carolina; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; his brother, Mike Moore (Janice) of Georgetown, Colorado; sister-in-law, Lynda Moore of McAllen, Texas; and close family friend, Scottie Smith (Linda) of McAllen, Texas. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dick Moore and his step-son, Jim Edlen.
