JOE KIOUS Obituary

JOE KIOUS Services for Mr. Joe Kious, who died on Friday, December 5, 2014, will be held at the United Methodist Church in Hunt, Texas, at 2:00pm on Wednesday, December 10, 2014. Joe was born in Austin, Texas on July 19, 1945, but spent most of his early life in the Rio Grande Valley. He graduated from Pan American University. He moved with his family to Kerrville in 1992 because he loved the rolling hills and pristine rivers of Kerr County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Kious and Jane Kious. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Kious, his son Brent Kious (wife Jennifer, children Leif and Kestrel), his daughter Holly Stroman (husband David, children Elle and William), his son Mark Kious, his sister Kay Drawe, his brother Richard Kious, his sister Becky Lohr, and numerous nieces and nephews. He started by teaching high school but was fortunate to make a career from his real passion, custom knife making, which he did for over 35 years. He became an internationally recognized craftsman whose creations were featured in numerous magazines, books, and films, and which will continue to be treasured by thousands. He was an avid hunter, traveling to Africa, Argentina, Canada, and other locales to hunt birds and big game as often as he could. He was also not above shooting the occasional prairie dog. He was a devoted husband and father, and a consummate gentleman. His life held many lessons for those he left behind, on the importance of honesty and straight dealing, on the benefits of education, hard work, and discipline, and on the value of pursuing your passion. I was a student of Mr. Joe Kious at WHS back in 1970 as a sophomore; I was in his English class. I enjoyed his teachings on Shakespeare and his fish stories. Mr. Kious was an exceptional teacher that taught with passion. I was saddened to hear of his passing, my brother Roger (also a student of Mr. Kious), gave me the bad news a few days ago. Thank you Mr. Kious for all you did for us students, you will not be forgotten.

Mr. Kious was a beloved teacher at Weslaco High School. He was a caring, gentle man who took the time to get to know his students. He made a lasting impact on my life with his sweet, gentle way and was one of my models when I taught school. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Joe and I were classmates and swappers/traders for many years. Never had contact with him past high school, but always remembered him with admiration. Joe was a natural genius with his hands from earliest times without question.
Too sad to read about this tragedy.
David Hays, Class of 1964, Weslaco High School.
