Robert Norman Kious was born on Sept. 2, 1928 in Tulsa to John Shelton Kious and Martha Elizabeth (Schneller) Kious. He grew up in Tulsa and after completing his education, he joined the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. He served the state as a Trooper for 30 years. His first assignment was in the Madill area for 10 years, then to the McAlester division, retiring in 1987. During his time as a Trooper, Norman was involved in a shooting incident, after he had pulled someone over. After a brief scuffle, Norman was shot 3 times. Norman married Yvonne Martin on March 8, 1968 in Gainesville, Tx., and they have lived in McAlester since 1967. Norman had also served in the U.S. Marine Corps, at the end of World War II and during the Korean War, where he was stationed on the Chosin Reservoir in 1950 when the 17-day Battle of Chosin Reservoir broke out. He was also a life member of the McAlester Elks Lodge and the VFW Post 1098.

Norman is survived by his wife, Yvonne Kious; his children, Tammie West and companion Roger Roland, and Jason West and companion Sheila Crenshaw; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Bethani Kuenstler and husband Glen and their son Weston, Charlie Crenshaw, Todd Crenshaw and Brooke and their kids, Rhylenn, Wyatt, Maxxon, and Hayden, Brittany Crenshaw, Madelyn Bush, Kansas Kious, Jace Kious Josh Kious, and Jake Kious.
