Xavier Casanova Obituary

Weslaco - Xavier E. Casanova, Sr., 69, passed away to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. He was born December 27, 1946 to Margarito & Dolores Casanova in Mercedes, TX. Mr. Casanova was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Vietnam War. He was a member and served as Chaplain of VFW Post 10802 of Donna, TX, as well as a member of the Weslaco Lions Club. Mr. Casanova worked for the United States Postal Service for over 30 years. During the Christmas holidays, when children would send their letters to Santa, Xavier would read each letter and respond to every child as Santa Claus. He was a great man of faith and loved the Lord with all his heart; as well as his wife, children, and grandchildren. Xavier was always called upon when family and friends were in need of prayer. He brought many people to the Lord and will be dearly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sonia Silva; and one brother, Roy Casanova. Mr. Casanova is survived by his wife, Josie G. Casanova; three children, Juan Carlos Casanova (Norma), Xavier E. Casanova, Jr. (Sarah), Celinda C. Musanje (Roscoe), all of Weslaco, TX; two sisters, Norma Alcala of San Antonio, TX, Yolanda Ramos of Kyle, TX & two brothers, Joe Casanova and Carlos Casanova, both of Weslaco, TX. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Charlie Casanova, Jr., Trinity Casanova, Khloe Casanova, Mia L. Casanova, Isabella N. Casanova and Angela B. Musanje. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco - Chapel of The Angels, with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco - Chapel of The Angels. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park. Military graveside services will be under the auspices of VFW Post #7473. Pallbearers will be Carlos Casanova, Joe Casanova, Javier Gonzalez, Joey Casanova, Javier Gonzalez, Jr., and Charlie Casanova, Jr. Arrangements are under the direction of Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco, Inc., 2602 N. Texas Ave., Weslaco, TX (956) 969-1461.

My sweet brother, I did not expect to let you go so young. You were my father figure, my dad after my daddy left us. We had our times when we were young, but as we grew into adults, we respected each other. Because of you, I met my husband, Joe. I love you brother
and I miss you already. May you Rest In Peace and enjoy life with our Heavenly Father in his gorgeous garden.
Your sister,
Joe and Norma Alcala

Today I got this notion to look up "Cass". I waited too long to reconnect.

We served together at Ft Bliss and RVN. I remember him most when we newly arrived and a few days later volunteers were asked to relieve troops in perimeter bunkers that were being overun by NVA/VC during the TET Offensive 69'. He immediately volunteered. Not to be left out I went also.

I think about him now again and the dark humor we shared in some situations.
