Ruth Nowland Obituary

Nowland, Ruth; age 87; of Mt. Pleasant; passed away Sunday, October 25, 2015; at Woodland Hospice House. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service for Ruth will be held at a date to be determined. Memorial contributions may be made to the World Wildlife Federation WWF. WorldWildlife.org Ruth was born October 5, 1928, in Brooklyn NY, daughter of the late Morris and Masha/Mary (Goldman) Tratner. Ruth attended Brooklyn College at the age of 15, and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Economics. Even though she wanted to become an astrophysicist she took a more practical approach and attended Central Michigan University where she earned her Masters and Specialist degrees in Psychology. As a child Ruth lived with her parents and sisters, Millie and Sally, on Coney Island with the beach only a block away on either side. Early in her working life she became a Macy’s Girl and modeled in Manhattan. After receiving her degree in Psychology she worked at and retired from the Clare-Gladwin R.E.S.D. as a School Psychologist, where she met many lifelong friends. She particularly excelled in helping adolescent boys. Ruth enjoyed traveling to places like Costa Rica, and the Soviet Union, including Russia, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. As a young woman she fought for women’s rights and equality and participated in the National Organization for Women (NOW) and their marches on Washington. Ruth had a passion for animals, especially her cats. Ruth was a long term member of the Pine River Friends, where she actively participated and had many close friends. Ruth is survived by three sons, Kenneth Rothman of Eugene OR, Jonathan Rothman of Ann Arbor, and Jeffrey Travers of Henderson NV; three grandchildren, Becca Rothman, Devin Rothman, and Rhiannon LeLievre; two sisters, Millie Wesotski of Smithtown, NY and Sally Pincus of Bayside NY; one great-grandchild, two nieces, and one nephew.
