Ripon - The Reverend Marcus Thomas Cunningham, Jr., age 55, of Ripon, WI, passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Father Marcus was born on July 6, 1963 in Evergreen Park, IL, the son of Marcus and Elizabeth (Libner) Cunningham. He graduated from Westmont Hilltop High School in Johnstown, PA, and went on to graduate from University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. In 1989 he married Anne-Marie Berube. He was the Priest of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Ripon and St. Mary's Chapel in Wautoma, WI. Father Marcus was also a Chaplain for various police forces. He had a passion for woodworking, and traveling, he loved to watch movies, grill out, and had a gift of talking to people, including strangers, and making people laugh.
Father Marcus is survived by his wife of 29 years, Anne-Marie Cunningham of Ripon, WI; his children, Anastasia Cunningham of Appleton, WI, Naomi Cunningham of Ripon, WI, Michael (Andrea Kiser) Cunningham of Green Bay, WI, Christi Cunningham and Nicole Cunningham of Ripon, WI; his father, Marcus T. Cunningham, Sr. of Benton, IL; a brother, Thomas (Lynn) Cunningham of Lisle, IL; a sister, Janine (Chris) Kane of Iowa City, IA; sister-in-law, Cheryl Berube of Fall River, MA; and nieces and nephews, Ben Pointer and Katy Cunningham of Lisle, IL, Hannah, Neil, and Ellen Kane of Iowa City, IA, and Leanne, Roger, Jr., and Brittany Berube of Fall River, MA . He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Cunningham; two nephews, Sean Cunningham Kane and Matthew Cunningham; mother and father-in-law, Joseph and Winona Berube; and a brother-in-law, Roger Berube.
A Requiem Eucharist for Father Marcus will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 1, 2018, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 217 Houston St., Ripon, WI, 54971. Bishop Matthew Gunter, assisted by Reverend Dr. Nicholas Myers, will preside. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established in Father Marcus' name.

It's hard to believe Marcus has been gone from us for three years! Every time I see a picture of him he makes me smile and I say a prayer. He was one of the most "salt and light" people I ever met and continues to inspire me. Praying for you, Anne Marie and kids on the anniversary. Blessings, Rob

What a loss to us all. I only learned of his paying today in "From the Mountain." He was always there when anyone needed him. He and his family even moved us into our house at seminary. He certainly lived his faith and ministry everyday. I will always remember him in love and appreciation.

I always looked up to and loved Marcus, from meeting him when we visited Sewanee as prospective students at the same time, through sharing classes and working together on projects at my first home, and seeing our families grow together. He impressed me with his ministry while we were students and I am sure had a powerful ministry over the last 12 years as well. Our Church is diminished without him. But thanks be to God that he is part of that great cloud of witnesses that surrounds us eternally. Blessings and peace in this time of grieving to Anne Marie and your (now so grown up) children.

Marcus was a lovely student and gentle man. I'm so sorry to hear of his death and send prayers for the family. I remember his wonderful sense of humour, his faithfulness to his call, and his love for everyone at the seminary. God rest his dear soul.

Marcus was my best man at my wedding. I am sad that Miles and various jobs left us not in contact with each other except through Facebook. Marcus taught me to always treat every person no matter who they were like they were the most important person in the world, because in Christ's eyes they are. I and my bride will miss my brother Marcus. May God bless the family during this time. I already feel blessed even to have known him for a part of our lives.
