Searle Lansing-Jones Obituary
Napa, CA - July 13, 1925 to March 17, 2018
Searle Lansing-Jones passed away peacefully in his apartment at the Meadows in Napa, CA on March 17, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura; daughter, Ruth Winter; and sister, Annette Jurev. He leaves behind son Mark Lansing-Jones, stepson Harold Krasinski, stepdaughter Alice Krasinski, and brother Roger Kenyon Jones.
Born in Orange, New Jersey, he enlisted in the Marines at age 17. An Iwo Jima survivor, he used the G.I. Bill to study fine art at Yale University. He obtained his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, and a MA in teaching from Columbia University.
A sculptor of both national and international recognition, his work can be found at the Levi Stewart Memorial Park in Kanab, UT, the Iwo Jima Museum in Hartford, CT, the Armed Forces Museum in Shelby, MS, the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, CT, and several private collections. He was a consultant and the site designer for the National Iwo Jima Memorial Monument Park in New Britain, CT. An Associate Professor of Fine Art at Central Connecticut State University for 20 years, he was invited in 1983 and 1991 to teach semesters at Hong-Ik University in Seoul, Korea, returning in 2004 to address the 33rd International Symposium of Arts.
Lansing-Jones retired with his wife to southern Utah, first to Kanab, then Mountain Springs, in the late 1980s, where they enjoyed the proximity to many national parks and monuments and where he continued his artistic pursuits. He relocated to Napa, CA, in 2013.
A private gathering to celebrate his life will be held in Cedar City, UT, later this summer. His remains will be interred at the Cedar City Cemetery. Please visit http://www.treadwaywigger.com/obituary to leave condolences for the family.
