Jack Lemmon Obituary

C. Jack Lemmon

Hurricane, UT

Our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, C. Jack Lemmon was welcomed into our Heavenly Father's arms on Sunday, October 5, 2014. Jack was born on July 30, 1925 to Arnold DeGrey and Sarah Worthen Lemmon in St. George, Utah. Jack was a town icon who resided here his entire life, except for brief periods of time spent in military and church service. Jack had a happy childhood. He grew up in Hurricane with plenty of room to run and play with his brother and sister. He greeted everyone with a broad smile and hearty handshake and made friends easily.

After serving his country from 1943-1946, he returned to Hurricane. He was lucky to have the opportunity to marry his sweetheart and fellow classmate, Delma Ballard. They were married in the St. George Temple for time and all eternity on April 26, 1946, and were blessed with three sons. Life started out in a small trailer, but was happy and successful. His priorities were Church and family, though he was always willing to help anyone in need. He was a hard worker and always took good care of his family. He served throughout his life in many Church, family, country, civic, and volunteer capacities. He had a strong work ethic and his word was his bond. He was a great example to all and left a great legacy.

Jack was a World War II veteran and served in the 1884th Engineer Aviation Battalion. Even at the young age of 18, he was a top notch grader operator and used this skill to clear runways for the military planes to safely land. He went on to use this skill during his two terms of service as the Hurricane City Mayor and was able to see all of the roads in Hurricane paved; helping to improve his beloved hometown; always leaving people and places better than he found them. He owned Jack Lemmon, Inc. (fuel distributorship and auto parts), partner in B&L Philgas, and owned the first swimming pool in Hurricane.

Jack was a dedicated, faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and diligently taught his family the gospel. His testimony and dedication was evident through his service to the Church. He served as Bishop, Stake President, Mission President (Baton Rouge Louisiana Mission), and served in the St. George Temple Presidency.

After 46 years of marriage, his wife, Delma, passed away on February 27, 1992. Jack was blessed to have a second chance at finding a best friend and companion with Angelyn Stout. They were married November 30, 1993 in St. George Utah. They served in the New York Rochester Mission serving at various Church history sites. They enjoyed traveling together while he served as the Chairman of the WCWCD Board. Their dedicated service continued in the St. George Utah Temple. They enjoyed 20 happy years together and supported each other through the trials of health in later life, before Angelyn passed away October 1, 2014.

Jack is survived by his sons James A. Lemmon (Sandra), Ronald J Lemmon (Jolene), and Stephen W Lemmon (Julie). He is also survived by his stepchildren Burton (Jeanie) Almond, Grant (Debbie) Almond, JaLynne (Gary) Murray, Deanna (David) Jenson and Loralee (Robert) Almond Wellborn. He was beloved by his 40 grandchildren, 85 great grandchildren, and the many missionaries he served with. He was preceded in death and is now reunited with his parents Arnold and Sarah Lemmon, his wife Delma, his wife Angelyn, his brother Merle, and his sister Sharon Isom. We will strive to follow the legacy you left! Until we meet again! We love you!

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hurricane LDS Stake Center, 677 S. 700 W., Hurricane, UT. Viewings will be Wednesday, October 8th from 6-8 p.m. at the Stake Center and on Thursday, October 9th from 9:00-10:30 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will take place in the Hurricane City Cemetery.

Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, (435) 673-2454. Friends and family are invited to sign Jack's guestbook at www.spilsburymortuary.com.

I only met Bro Lemmon twice. Once when he sealed my wife and I nearly 30 years ago and a second time just a couple of years ago. I told him he'd sealed my wife and I. He grabbed us by the hands and trotted us down the hall in the temple to where his wife was. He said, "Tell her. Tell her. She doesn't believe any of them took." Touched our lives twice with an eternal impact.

Jim, Ron, Steve and families:

I was saddened to read of Jacks's passing. There are people who leave a place in this world that can't be filled…, Jack was one of them. What a legacy of faith, goodness and service. His memory will live forever in the history of his beloved Hurricane. Jack was a gentleman and always greeted with a sense of hope and goodness. He was interested in others lives and well being, and made certain that he left you better than he found you. The world loved Jack Lemmon….and his family has continued in his legacy of love and service to others.

I send my personal condolences along with those from those that work in our business. He will be missed.

With Love,

Buck Hurst
