Frances Kaleka Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 18 to Jan. 19, 2008.
Frances Kaleka August 22, 1899 January 17, 2008 Surrounded by family at her bedside, our beloved `Nan' passed away peacefully at Saskatoon City Hospital on Thursday, January 17, 2008. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Left to grieve are her daughters, Helen Hay and Ann McCallum of Saskatoon, SK; her son, William (Marie) Kaleka of Courtenay, BC; ten grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Nan was the last of her family and was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Kaleka; son, Walter Kaleka; and grandson, Ron Kaleka. Family was of the utmost importance to Nan and her quick wit and humour will be missed by all who knew her. Gardening and cooking were her passions and no one ever left her place hungry. Nan was a totally independent lady and lived by herself and in her own home until her passing. Nan was born on the family farm near Rosthern in 1899. She married Joseph Kaleka on August 31, 1919 and lived in Hawker, Hepburn and finally Saskatoon after Joseph retired from the CNR in 1957. A special thank you to Dr. E.M. Nykiforuk and the nurses and staff of City Hospital for their kindness and caring for Nan. The Funeral Service will take place on Monday, January 21, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. from PARK FUNERAL CHAPEL, 311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 279 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK, S7K 2H8 or a charity of the donor's choice. Condolences to the family can be sent by email to [email protected]. Arrangements in care of Derryl Hildebrandt, 244 2103.

In the absence of a memory
In a faith we must go on
And an order of a line up
For when we go and come
The meaning of our journey
Where we fight to find our way
The choices and the people for whom we love and care,
And no matter what our age is, no matter of our path
In the end we are all angels that are here to teach us love
And the most important thing we need
Is to learn not to hold on
For those souls who've crossed to the other side
Have chosen to go home

Our beloved Nan....That spirit that never gave up, that twinkle in her eye, that fabulous sense of humour, that love of family...

Our hero is gone but wow, what a legacy she left us all. Nan placed her stamp of approval on five generations of us who will keep the legend of Nan going eternally.

We love you Nan, we celebrate your life, but we miss you terribly!

I MOURN THE PASSING OF FRANCES KALEKA ONE OF CANADA'S AND SASKATCHEWAN'S OLDEST RESIDENTS. AT 108 SHE HAD LIVED IN THREE CENTURIES 1800'S,1900'S AND 2000'S AND WAS A TRUE FRIEND TO ME AND MY FAMILY ON MY TRIPS THROUGH SASKATOON. THE PEOPLE OF SASKATCHEWAN SHOULD PAY TRIBUTE TO A WONDERFUL WOMEN AND TRUE SASKATCHEWAN PIONEER. MAY SHE REST IN PEACE IN HER BELOVED SASKATCHEWAN.

Please accept my sincerest sympathy and know that I too will miss Nanny. I am greatful to have known her and to have just had a visit with her early this past week. As a teenager, I fondly remember being welcomed into her home to share in her wonderful cooking.
When I think of Nanny now and in days to come, I will smile warmly in remembrance.

Sincerely,
Lynn Peterson

We were so fortunate to have such a warm wonderful great and great great grandmother in our lives for so long.

Nanny was well known for always having food for anyone who stepped across her threshold and we will all miss her and her perogies very much.

Although we are all grieving our loss, we know that she is being welcomed with open arms by her many family and friends who have passed before her.

We will miss you, Nanny. Love forever,

TJ, Corissa, Taegan, Beckett and Caedence
