Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2004.
KITZ _ Steven. It is with sorrow the family of 'Steve' Kitz announces his passing at the Saskatoon City Hospital on Monday, August 9. Steve was born on December 11, 1919 on a farm near Jedbourgh, Saskatchewan. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Ann Kitz; his wife, Diana in 1996; a daughter, Zonia in infancy; daughter-in-law, Iris in 2003; three brothers, John, Peter and Tony; sisters, Mary and Ann. He is survived by his children, Lanny of Emerald Park, SK, Donna (Garry) Dyck of Saskatoon; grandchildren, Colette (Greg) Nicholson, Monique (Keith) Zazula, Brenda Kitz, Michael (Stacey) Dyck and Shauna (Dean) Person; three great grandchildren, Brandon and Lucas Nicholson and Zachary Zazula. Steve is also survived by his sisters, Rose, Zonia (Gregory), Janet (Ivan); brothers, Metro (Mary) and Bill (Ann). Steve and Diana were married in 1942 during the Second World War. Steve volunteered to serve his country by joining the Canadian Army and saw action in both the Pacific and Atlantic theatres of the war. He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Rangers and participated in the invasion of Kiska in the Aleutians and as a member of the Regina Rifles. Served in Europe where he was wounded in action near the end of the war. During his military career Steve earned a number of medals from the Canadian, American and Dutch governments. After a lengthy recovery from his war wound Steve and Diana and their son Lanny who was born in 1943 commenced farming near Blaine Lake. In 1953 Donna was born and rounded out the family. As is still the case in farming there were good years and bad years mostly bad. Consequently, Steve took a position with the Saskatchewan Ferry Service in 1958 and operated the Petrofka Ferry while continuing to farm until 1961 when the ferry was replaced by a bridge. Steve and Diana then sold the farm and moved to Clarkboro where Steve operated the ferry until his retirement in 1984 whereupon Steve and Diana moved to Aberdeen. Steve resided in Aberdeen until he moved to the Sherbrooke Community Centre where he continued to reside until his death. In his younger years Steve took part in many fishing and hunting trips, which kept the family enjoying wild meat and fish for many years. The family wishes to thank the staff at Sherbrooke Community Centre for the excellent care given to Steve. In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve's name may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada, Saskatchewan Chapter, PO Box 309, Saskatoon, SK, S7K 3L3. A Celebration of Steve's life will take place at the Park Funeral Chapel, 311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK on Friday, August 13, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. Interment of Steven's cremated remains will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Kenneth J. Scheirich of PARK FUNERAL CHAPEL, 244-2103.
