Ronald Bonham Obituary

Ronald D. (Ron) Bonham, 73

Selma - Ronald D. (Ron) Bonham, 73, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016 at home, where he wished to be, surrounded by family and friends, after a brief, but hard-fought battle with a vicious, aggressive liver cancer.

Born May 31, 1942, in Muncie, he was the only child of Russell D. and Carmen I. (Neel) Bonham.

Ron graduated in 1960 from his beloved Muncie Central High School, where his love for the school and accomplishments were well known. Ron was Mr. Basketball in 1960, his senior year, when he scored more than 2,000 career points. He later played for a National Championship University of Cincinnati team in 1962. Bonham played for two NBA Championship Boston Celtics teams, and also played for the Indiana Pacers.

Also, while in high school, his love for music emerged as he and some of his friends formed a group called "The Originals", which gained popularity and radio play with the songs "Bandstand Sound" and "Lend Me Your Ear".

After his basketball career, Ron became Superintendent at Prairie Creek Reservoir under Mayor Paul Cooley and remained in that position for thirty-eight years. During this time, he dedicated countless hours, holidays, after hours, anything and everything it took to make the park the best it could be for the visitors he tried very hard to please. Every year Ron was in the icy reservoir waters in March helping install piers to make sure everything was "just right".

During this time and to further his service to the citizens of Muncie and Delaware County, he ran for and served as County Commissioner for three terms. He summed up his service as "just trying to do his part in making life better for his constituents in Delaware County and to do the best he could within his power for anyone who sought his help".

Prior to, during, and after Ron's years of dedicated public service, another dedication was being formed. From the time Ron was a small boy, his father, Russell, would take him along while fishing on the White River. As time passed, not only did he instill the love of the outdoors in his son, but also to respect the living creatures and the surroundings in which they lived. As soon as Ron was old enough, he was also allowed to accompany his father hunting where he was taught the same principles.

In 1970, Ron met his future soul mate, best friend, love of his life, JJ. They married in 1973 and spent forty-three incredible years together. As time passed, their interests and passion for the outdoors and its creatures transformed to be as one. As with his father, Ron first allowed JJ to tag along with his hunt, then JJ snuck an eight-week old springer spaniel puppy home, then JJ had to train said springer spaniel to hunt for Ron, which required JJ to have a shotgun. Then, they just had to get another springer and thus the travels began. First northern Indiana pheasant, then Iowa, then in the last fifteen years, they were fortunate to experience pheasant hunting in North Dakota with its raw beauty and solitude.

During this time, they bought land east of the reservoir where their house was built, where Ron spent the rest of his life. Adjoining property was acquired, and their land was the first in Delaware County to go in to the Red Tail Conservancy, assuring it be kept in its natural state, protected forever from development.

With the help of State and Federal Wildlife programs and personal investment, Ron had two wetlands created. With the help of friends, a vision became a reality. Every day possible, Ron would take JJ and go all around the property enjoying the different ducks, geese, bullfrogs, blue herons, grebes of the water, the quail, rabbits, deer, and unspeakably beautiful wildflowers of the prairie grass fields. It was this setting that made Ron most at peace and one he held dear to his final breath. He was proud to be called a conservationist, and his dedication and presence will be sorely missed.

Mr. Bonham was a member of the National Wildlife Federation, Ducks Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl, Ruffed Grouse Society, American Woodcock Society, Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever, the Sportsman's Alliance, the Izaak Walton League of America, and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Left to grieve his loss immeasurably and cherish their life together is his soul mate, best friend, hunting partner and wife, JJ (Jarnagin) Bonham; his beloved daughter, Dr. Nicole (Bonham) Sims, of which he was so proud; his son-in-law, John Sims; and his cherished grandson, Liam Avery, whom he was so looking forward to teaching to hunt and fish like his father showed him. Also left behind are his two springer spaniels, Lakota and Bizmark, who will not understand when hunting season rolls around why Poppy's not here to take them.

A celebration of Ron's life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2016 at Muncie Central High School Fieldhouse, with Pastor Allie Craycraft officiating.

Friends may call at the Muncie Central High School Fieldhouse, from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2016. Please use the West side entrance of the Muncie Central Fieldhouse.

In my generation and as a graduate of Muncie Central, 1968, I have been remembering Ron for the past five years in my novel, "Seeing Beyond the Shadows" (published in March, 2020, and still selling). I first knew about Ron, because his Dad was my excellent, 3rd grade Sunday School teacher, and his Mom was in our choir at Normal City E.U.B. Church. In 1959-60 I went to every home game of the Bearcats, the best high school team I have seen. In the novel, Ron is the inspiration for the main character's (Andy) basketball talent. Andy goes to Purdue and becomes the best freshman basketball player in the nation. He gets an offer from the Celtics, but he is trained as a special agent in the State Department. I think Ron would like my portrayal of Andy. The book is also written about the culture and time, when Ron went to school. Of course, Andy is born in Muncie and begins his schooling there. Andy, like the Bonhams, is a dedicated Christian and has a special gift of God. God bless you, Ron. Soon we will be in heaven with you!

This is about the fourth year in a row that I've shared about Ron; it's an honor. I also thought a lot of his dad, Russell Bonham, my third-grade Sunday School teacher. Ron was the main person, who inspired me to play basketball from age 9 to age 43. Ron and his 1960 Muncie Central Bearcat team was the most inspirational experience I've had in sports. I went to every home game in 1959-60; I was nine. They were the best high school team that I've seen and the best I know about. I still remember Ron's turnaround jump shot (I tried to copy it). The quickness and shooting accuracy of the team was better than most college teams and some NBA teams. The number of points they scored every game was unique for high school and excellent for college teams. God bless you, Ron. The best to you and yours. I wrote about you in my novel, "Seeing Beyond the Shadows."

I want to honor Ron. Some of the comments I have shared before. Ron was a hero and inspiration to me and to a lot of kids my age. I started playing basketball in early elementary, because of Ron's inspiration. He is honored in my novel, "Seeing Beyond the Shadows", which was released in May, 2020. His dad was also inspirational: he was my third grade Sunday School teacher at Normal City E.U.B. I remember his mom singing in the choir. I will say again that the 1960 Bearcat basketball team was the best team Indiana has had. I saw every home game during the 1959-60 season. I will never forget Ron's turn around jump shot. It was fitting that he wore a Muncie and Cincinnati Bearcat jersey and a Boston Celtics jersey. God bless him and his family.

Last year I shared that Ron was my inspiration to play basketball. I graduated from Muncie Central in 1968. Ron's dad was my third grade Sunday School teacher. I've been a Celtic's fan, since he joined the team. I believe his Central team with Jim Davis and John Dampier was the best team Indiana has had. I went to every home game during Ron's senior season. I honor Ron in my new novel, "Seeing Beyond the Shadows". The novel is about saving America's traditional values. I write about how Ron and Paul Hogue beat Ohio State and John Havlicek and Jerry Lucas to win the national championship. (The main character in the book is in the NCAA playoffs the year that Ron and the Bearcats win the championship.) I also wanted to try to reach Ron's wife or a family member, so I could give them a copy, when it comes out by mid May. God bless Ron and his family.

I just read about Ron's passing. He is The Celebrity from Muncie. His dad was my third grade, Sunday School teacher. When I was 10, I saw every game that Ron played at the Muncie field house during his senior year. He inspired me to play and to love the game of basketball.

I will never forget my years at Muncie Central and "Mr Basketball" . Reading his obituary ,all I could think was , he accomplished so much in his life, there should be a book written about him or even a movie as he was a great example to us of how we should do our very best to give back to this earth in any we can and to take of it , and to cherish our families. God bless you Ron and and your family. Sincerely Ruth

Janet,
I am so sorry for your loss. It's been too many years since we've seen each other. But I was there when you first met Ron in Cowan across the ally from your house. Remember he drove a Buick Riviera. You fell "head over heels in love" for Ron. And Ron fell for you. Living in the Chicago area for 44 years, I can't tell you how many times after finding out that I'm from Muncie: people would ask," Do you know Ron Bonham?" May all your happy memories help you get thru the rough moments ahead. You are in my thoughts and prayers old friend.
God Bless.

As a county commissioner, Ron was my first "boss".
Ron was well known for basketball, and rightly so.
But more than that, he was a genuinely nice person, and decent human being.
Muncie and Delaware County are better places because of him.
Respectfully
