Barry Thomas Obituary

Barry D. Thomas DENVER, CO - Barry D. Thomas died on December 6, 2018 after a brave 10-year battle with Multiple Myeloma in Denver, CO at the age of 56. Barry Thomas is survived by his children Alexis, Jacob, Lucas and Dylan Thomas, his mother Rebecca Anderson, his siblings Diana Thomas Carr (Wesley) and Brian G. Thomas (Susan), many nieces and nephews, his ex-wife Jennifer Thomas, and girlfriend Deborah DeYoung. He was preceded in death by his father, Grady Blair Thomas, and step-father, J. Glenn Anderson. Barry Thomas was born on November 11, 1962 in Dillon, SC to Grady and Rebecca Thomas. He graduated from Richland Northeast High School in Columbia, SC. He got his start in radio in 1979 at WNOK in Columbia, SC, working his way up to program manager and then operations manager. As a brilliant leader in the Radio Broadcast Industry as it moved from analog to digital broadcasting, Barry had an illustrious career that took him to Cleveland, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and eventually to Denver. Barry spent more than 35 years working in radio technical operations, building radio facilities, and serving his industry on a variety of national technical organizations. He participated in numerous workshops and seminars as a speaker, as well as produced articles that were helpful to his colleagues in the radio industry. He most recently was director of engineering at KSE Radio in Denver. Barry was a Senior Member and Fellow of the Society of Broadcast Engineers and served two terms as SBE president. Barry was co-author of five U.S. technology patents and he was SBE-Certified as a Professional Broadcast Engineer (CPBE), a Digital Radio Broadcast (DRB) Specialist, and a Broadcast Networking Engineer (CBNE). He received the 2011 Radio World Excellence in Engineering Award from the editors of Radio World, the leading publication for radio managers and engineers. Barry loved his two sets of twins and would provide many fun times of skiing, camping, Halloween/Christmas decorating, and so much more. His recreational passions were sailing and skiing. He excelled at anything he put his mind to and he strived for excellence in every area of his life. A memorial service is scheduled on December 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at NorthStar Christian Center, 711 Longtown Rd. Columbia, SC, 29229, with burial to follow in Dillon, SC. Prior to the service, family visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. in the sanctuary of NorthStar Christian Center. There will also be a Celebration of Life service in Denver, CO on January 19, 2019. I was deeply saddened to hear of Barry's passing. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all the family especially Becky. My husband and I had many fun times with Barry when he would hang out with the Tuesday night fellowship and would help Mike with the PA system. Barry was loved by friends and family.
