Julia Vanderpool Obituary

Julia A. Vanderpool ELGIN - Julia A. Vanderpool, 83, of Elgin, died Thursday, July 13, 2017. Born October 9, 1933, in Dekalb, Texas, to the late Roland Earl and Lela Maggie Thornton Thompson, Julia was a loving and devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all. The widow of the late Richard F. Vanderpool, Julia started a Quilt Group at Royersford Baptist Church in Pennsylvania during the 1980s. After moving to Columbia with her husband, she founded a quilt group at Northeast Presbyterian Church that later was renamed the Julia Vanderpool Quilters at Northeast Presbyterian Church. They have sent over 500 quilts all over the world. When she was not able to go on mission trips, she offered quilts made with lots of love to people in orphanages, flood and fire victims, or anyone else that just needed comfort. After her husband's retirement, they traveled the country in an RV, visiting friends and family and historical sites. A member of Northeast Presbyterian Church, she enjoyed being a member of the Good News Sunday School class. Survivors include sons, Richard Vanderpool, Jr., Thomas Vanderpool and Samuel Vanderpool (Barbara); daughter, Carol Antley; like-her-daughter, Deborah Carnes; grandchildren, Jennifer Symms (Lawrence), Christina Moss, David Moss (Rachel), Ian Greulich (Jessica), Melissa Wahl (Master Gunnery Sgt. Shaun Wahl), Douglas Greulich (Jena); 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Cummings. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, James Earl Thompson. The funeral service for Mrs. Vanderpool will be held 2 o'clock Monday, July 17th at Northeast Presbyterian Church with Dr. George D. Crow, III officiating. Interment will follow in the churchyard. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the Grand Hall of the church beginning at 1 o'clock. Memorials may be made to Northeast Presbyterian Church's Legacy of Faith or to the Julia Vanderpool Quilters at Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Road, Columbia, 29223. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family. Memories and Condolences may be shared at ShivesFuneralHome.com.

I meet Julia through her daughter Carol many years ago. A group of us would meet, have dinner and attend shows at Town theater. She enjoyed the shows so much and I enjoyed discussing quilting projects with her. When she found out I had lost my Mom many years ago she told me I could call her Mom. She was a sweet, funny, and kind person. I will miss her smile and stories she would tell. Rest in peace for you left your mark in this world. Blessing to you family. I will miss you.
