David Esken Obituary

David Louis Esken, 64, of Scranton, died at home Tuesday, May 10, surrounded by family.

David was born in Ypsilanti, Mich., on Nov. 24, 1946, son to Dorothy Cooper Esken and the late Gerald Esken (Auburn, New York). On June 27, 1970, David was married to the former Donna Phillips of Scranton. This year would have been their 41st anniversary.

David was a 1965 graduate of Auburn East High School in Auburn, N.Y.,, and went on to attend Auburn Community College, prior to joining the Naval Reserve and serving two years active duty at the Keflavik Naval Air Station in Iceland.

David was known for his selfless and caring personality. Even after his stroke on Jan. 1, 2003, he would annually participate in the St. Joseph's Festival in Dunmore as a worker in the funnel cake booth.

Mr. Esken often enjoyed the attractions Northeast Pennsylvania had to offer, including frequently attending baseball games with his family and sometimes weekly trips to the Mohegan Sun Casino. Prior to his illness, David was a parishioner of Immac- ulate Conception Church on Taylor Avenue in Scranton.

David is survived by his daughters, Laurie Esken Scott and husband, Jeffery of Townsend, Del.; and Jennifer Esken, Melissa Esken and Erin Esken, all at home.

As well he leaves behind three sons, David Jeffery Esken, Scranton; Russell Esken and wife, Corinne, Hagerstown, Md.; and Bryan Esken and wife, Krista, Scranton.

In addition, he is survived by his sister, Linda Esken Moore and husband, James, Auburn; a grandson, David Benjamin Esken, Hagerstown; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday at 9:30 in Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Avenue, to be celebrated by the Rev. Gerard McGlone, cousin.

Interment with military honors by the Dupont AMVETS in Cathedral Cemetery.

Friends may call Friday, 4 to 8 p.m., at the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Avenue. The family asks that those attending the funeral please proceed directly to the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509.

christ has taken home a man , a father, a husband who made many laugh...he has done his duty....raised wonderful children who flourished into amazing adults. now they must live as they have their journeys. in heaven he dwells, watching these children and the love of his life continue. the pain will seem insurmountable...they will grieve, reminis, and remember who they are....the legacy and only love of David Louis Esken.

My wife Donna and I were deeply shocked and saddened by David's passing. He always brightened our too-short times together with his humor and outlook. He will be greatly missed by those of us who considered ourselves part of the extended Esken family.

I knew your husband/dad in high school as with his last name being Esken and mine Fabel, he always sat in front of me in homeroom. We had a great friendship as a result and it continued throughout our years at Auburn East High School. He was a wonderful person and it was my privilege to have known him. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all in this time of grief. I will cherish the memories I have of David. He so loved his family. The wonderful memories you have of him will keep him alive forever in your hearts.
