Ruth Normand Obituary

Funeral Services for Ruth Elizabeth "Granny" Normand will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2011 in the chapel of John Kramer & Son with Rev. Chris Nayak officiating. Interment will be in Alexandria Memorial Gardens, Woodworth.

Ruth Elizabeth "Granny" Normand, 94, of Alexandria, was born December 20, 1916 and passed away Friday, January 7, 2011.

There are really just not enough words to describe the person she was to so many of the special lives she touched and the amazing lives that touched hers. Granny loved life, and her life was an extraordinary one.

For those who met Granny, know they met one of the most special, loving, supportive souls that has forever touched their hearts. She truly was the most loving, supportive, compassionate person to all those, whose lives she touched, and who touched hers. And there have been so many. Granny was a Guardian Angel on this earth and a rock of support, love and strength to everyone she met. She spent a large portion of her life working and caring for children at Pinecrest State School and the day care at Horseshoe Baptist church, and she always loved working with children.

Granny was an incredible pianist who filled a room with magic when she played. She was an excellent athlete, particularly enjoying tennis when she was young. She was a lover of all animals, especially her cats. She would never turn away a stray animal (or person)! When you met Granny, her heart stayed with you and your heart stayed with her. She was such a loving, giving, compassionate soul who just lit up a room with her smile and her spirit!

She was so full of joy, optimism and strength to everyone she met. She had so many close friends that she adored and that also adored her. She will be so terribly missed by all of us, whose lives she touched, but her spirit will stay with us forever.

Granny was such a strong lady, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and a most treasured friend to everyone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Normand, Sr., and her loving children, daughter, Ginger Normand Schroeder, Henry M. "Bootsie" Normand, Jr. and Michael "Mike" Normand.

She is survived by so many family members and amazing friends that came into and touched her incredibly special life. Her two sisters, Regina Kruse and Ann Normand (husband, Hoffard "Buzzy" Normand); granddaughters, Mimi Spruiell (husband, Joe Spruiell) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Molly Lintott Alvarado of Houston, Texas and her great-grandchildren, Michael and Alyssa Alvarado. By nieces, Sue-Q Baum (husband, Jimmy) and Angie Fain (husband, William), and their children, John and Mary Stella Kruse, and their children; by her great nieces, Elizabeth Tranchina, Kristie Adame (husband, Mark) and their children, and great-nephew, John Paul Tranchina. Granny is also survived by her three special friends, Jayne Blackman, Debbie Story and Chris Arny, as well as her cat, Junior, who was her hero and so many other special family members and friends that touched her heart, too many to list (but you know who you are)!

We know our Granny would want to thank every single wonderful person who has helped her and has been there for her during her life.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, January 9, 2011 and from 11 a.m. until time of service Monday at John Kramer & Son.

A recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Hoffard "Buzzy" Normand, John Kruse, Andrew "Red" Schroeder, Chris Arny, Cliff Miller, Mike Deville, Dick Blackman and Leonard Johnston.

Honorary Pallbearers Jerry Honigman, Mark Ivy, Joe Spruiell and Kevin Alvarado.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, please feel free to make donations in Memory of Granny to D.A.W.G.S. (www.dawgsntexas.com), or B.A.R.K. (www.barkdogrescue.org), or the charity of your choice, as Granny was just such a giving and loving person.

I was blessed to have Aunt Ruth come into my life about six years ago. From the first time I entered her home, she welcomed me with open arms as though we had known each other for years. She was one of the most caring, loving, generous, people I have ever met. I will miss my periodic visits with her, the twinkle in her eyes, her cards and notes, and most of all her lust for life despite the challenges she faced.

Susan, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I know how special Aunt Ruth was to you. She loved and cared for you very much and will certainly watch over you from her place in heaven.

Mimi and Molly, Granny was such a wonderful example for us to follow of grace, kindness, strength and fun under the most dire circumstances. She will always have our heart. We love the way she nurtured the spirit of a generation of young men in Alexandria when it wasn't really socially acceptable to do so. She is our hero. We will really miss her.
